Equivoque Origins
In Bart Whaley’s Encyclopedic Dictionary of Magic 1584-1988, copyright 1989 by Barton Stewart Whaley published by Jeff Busby Magic, Inc., January, 1989 he states:
"This method was first exposed and published in 1785 (Decremps) as used by French magicians."
Does anyone know which book he is referring to and does anyone have an English translation of the description referenced?

CARC is currently printing a translation of Decrempsin their Gibreciere
Brad Henderson magician in Austin Texas
Re: Equivoque Origins
I believe the CARC translation is of Ponsin's Nouvelle Magie Blanche Dévoilée, though equivoque is mentioned.
Decremps published Magie Blanche Dévoilée in 1784, English translation The Conjurer Unmasked in 1785.

You chose Ponsin's Nouvelle Magie Blanche Dévoilée? Great, then that's the one we'll set aside. That leaves us with Magie Blanche Dévoilée, so that's the one we'll use...
Re: Equivoque Origins
If that's not it another book by Decremps, Testament de Jérome Sharp, has a chapter on page 150 about magician's choice.

Re: Equivoque Origins
It's definitely in "Testament de Jérôme Sharp" (1786). Chapter XI is "Guessing which of four cards a person will choose freely", using basic equivoque. It's on page 119 of this later edition:If that's not it another book by Decremps, Testament de Jérome Sharp, has a chapter on page 150 about magician's choice.

I don't think the earlier Decremps books have anything like this, though I'm only going by the summaries in the introduction to Gaultier's "Magic Without Apparatus". The "Testament" is the most important of the four in terms of card magic. Roberto Giobbi did a study of it, which is available from Lybrary.com.

Re: Equivoque Origins
Yes, it's in Le Testament de Jérôme Sharp that we have the first explanation of the "equivoque"
In Nouvelle magie blanche dévoilée by Ponsin, we have the first explanation of "I take or I leave" (magician's choice)

The late Charles Reynolds published a series on The Hobson Principle in the magazine Vibrations from August 1989 to January 1990. Does anyone know where I could get copies of this magazine?

I wouldn't swear to it but I seem to recall Vibrations being one of the early online magazines. Searching for it was fruitless, though, even using the https://web.archive.org/.The late Charles Reynolds published a series on The Hobson Principle in the magazine Vibrations from August 1989 to January 1990. Effect and method are inextricably linked.

Re: Equivoque Origins
I'm looking for the author of a book entitled Tricky Treats. Chapter Eight, pp213-224, has an Equivoque routine entitled, "A Process of Elimination." I have a copy of the chapter but no indication of who wrote the book.
