Universities or Institutions With Magic Collections

Postby Bob Farmer » May 1st, 2019, 1:35 pm

I am compiling a list of universities, museums or other institutions (e.g., the Smithsonian) with magic collections. The list is limited to public entities so would not contain private collections (e.g., Bill Kalush's Conjuring Arts). Any assistance would be most appreciated.

The H. Adrian Smith Collection at Brown University. From their web site: https://library.brown.edu/collatoz/info.php?id=104
The H. Adrian Smith Collection of Conjuring and Magicana, long considered one of the finest private libraries on conjuring and magic, includes 16th century titles on natural magic, alchemy, astrology, religious rites, and witchcraft. Later holdings include sections on conjuring, card tricks and games, magicians as performers, magic periodicals and other works intended for practicing magicians, posters, ephemera, and realia. The Collection is the gift and bequest of the collector, class of 1930, who as an undergraduate put himself through Brown by giving magic performances.

Even though it says "private libar[y]", it is not in private hands, and I believe that it can be viewed with appointment.

Harry Ransom Center at the University of Texas at Austin.

The Billy Rose Theatre collection at the NYPL has a great deal of magic material, but I don't believe it is separated out as a magic collection.

Carl W. Jones Magic Collection at Princeton Univ Library.

Dr. A.J. Delario Magic Collection at Washington College.

Lester Lake Magic Collection at Ohio State Univ.

Frank Buhla Magic Collection at Ohio State Univ.

McManus-Young Collection at the Library of Congress.

Willys A. Myers Magic Collection at UCLA.

American Museum of Magic.

Wikipedia has a list of magic museums.

Looks like we went over this before . . . .
