Documentary on Medicine Shows

Postby Bill Mullins » September 17th, 2012, 6:06 pm

From 1983. Interviews with some old medicine show performers, oral histories, footage, recreations, etc.

Some of the attitudes are not consistent with modern sensibilities, so be advised.

Just finished watching and it is fascinating!
More should see this. Wonderful that they made this while some of the surviving Med. Show workers were still alive.

Many a magician got work on medicine shows, a generation or more ago. THE BILLBOARD magazine had a regular page devoted to them , just as it did for vaudeville, burlesque, etc.
While elements of the show were certainly dated and out of place today. It is valuable that these film makers preserved, how it was, rather than a cleaned up/sanitized version.

This is a film worth seeing. Enjoy.
