America's Got Talent - Rudy Coby and Puck tonight

Discussions of new films, books, television shows, and media indirectly related to magic and magicians. For example, there may be a book on mnemonics or theatrical technique we should know or at least know about.

Eric Buss was also on the show (with his snake cans)

Judges weren't too generous with Rudy and Eric, but Puck got a nod (and did a very nice job with his 90 seconds).

---Yes, sorry I did not know beforehand that Eric Buss was also scheduled.
---This show had twelve acts found through Youtube. I think the world of tonights magic representatives and it is fantastic that three were selected. But things just didnt go as well as they could have. For those who dont want to waste two hours of their lives watching in other time zones or via Tivo or any other recording method and my sincere apologies to anyone who watched (the entire show) due to my original post - here is the order of the acts:
A guy with a bird (worth watching just to see if his stunt succeeds)
Rock band
Rudy Coby
Teen girls dancing
Teen boy singer
Comedienne
Eric Buss
Guy playing air guitar (really?)
Puck
Teen girl singer
Guy wearing mask (really?) playing the carillon (really?)
Hip hop dance group
---There are, about, what? A million and six new videos a day on Youtube? And the nine non-magic acts that were chosen were the best? Wow.
---Man, oh man, I miss Ed Sullivan.

So - do we think the judges comments for Eric and rudy were accurate or off base?

And was puck's music a remix of copperfields music for the dancing ties?

well, both Eric and Rudy did the act from their youtube video, so it does seem like a bit of an unfair bait and switch to invite these guys on the show and then bash them for performing the act you asked them to perform (neither performance was 100% flawless, but they were both close enough)

I do think part of the problem for Rudy, was that America's Got Talent has a shorter attention span than a normal magic venue. I think its telling that the youtube video that he got voted onto the show with, was an edited version of the puppet boy act... perhaps he should have kept those edits intact?

What's the deal with Rudy Coby being called a Nazi? It seems I can't watch the segments online sitting here in Finland.

I think within the known constraints of the competition, the judges comments were overly blunt, but essentially accurate. The acts really needed an editor for this competition.

Ninety seconds just isn't enough time to mess around, especially in such a large venue. The AGT audience is seeking hard hitting, quick spectacle. Anything that doesn't "Wow!" them immediately is most likely not going to make the cut.

It's like the difference between competition chili vs. something you might want to eat a whole bowl full of.

A summary of the judges comments on Rudy are about half-way down this page: http://content.usatoday.com/communities ... e/1?csp=34

From USAToday:

Said Sharon, "You're very dark. You just look a bit like a Nazi." Said Howard, "No, he looks like Jack LaLanne."

And why are there always a British judge on American "Reality"shows.
