i have seen references to this text through phantoms at the card table and the annotated erdnase and i was wondering if its a good read?

Yes. Although most of it can be taken with a pinch of salt, it is a very easy read and most enjoyable. I think I've read it about four or five times - I tend to revisit it every couple of years if I've got nothing else to read.
