The movie is called "Shade," and stars Gabriel Byrne, Thandie Newton, Hal Holbrook, Melanie Griffith, and Sylvester Stallone. I would not call it a "Stallone Movie."
The film has been written and directed by Damian Nieman, a long-time cardman and Magic Castle member. Hal Holbrook plays The Professor in the film.
They are in the process of finishing up the edit.
Paul Wilson and Earl Nelson were the technical advisors. There is a lot of card handling in the film--lots of gambling moves, setups, etc. I've seen a good deal of the film and it's very good.
Expect to see it released theatrically either in the spring or fall.

I read somewhere that there is a possibility that this film may go directly to TV or Video. Anyone else hear anything like this?

Best thoughts,

John:

I was fortunate to have seen the video of some of the scenes as shown by Damian and Paul at the LVMI a few weeks ago.

The plot, cast, acting, general "feel", and gambling-magic bits all look great. Everyone there at the preview was very, very impressed.

I could be wrong (again) but I can't imagine that it would go direct to video. It looks to me like the Real Deal. (OK, yes, it's also the Reel Deal, but I didn't want to say that.)

Get ready to shell out the full eight bucks at your local megaplex, maybe more than once!

There has been absolutely no talk of this film going straight to video.
You may be thinking of another film that Stallone is in that was called "D-Tox" and now has some other title, perhaps "Eye See You," or something like that. That film IS going straight to video and comes out in early 2003.
