"Also don't forget the great Mr. Ed episode were he went to the SAM convention. (yes they let him in the dealers room without a badge.... butt he had talent! ) "

If the SAM made people have both a badge AND talent, it could have been a very empty dealers room.

<<Also don't forget the great Mr. Ed episode...>>

And, lest we forget, Mr. Ed was created by one of our own--the incredibly funny Lou Derman.

Someone mentioned comedian Jeff Altman as interested in magic.

Backwards.

Jeff was a magician first, and a fine card handler, not just interested but a full time mage... who got into doing comedy. :D :(

Mr. Ed was also a bigger star than Blaine. :D

Y'know, it's funny, but at another board I was just making a comment this afternoon about how depressing a comment on magic it was that some magicians will always find an excuse to turn a discussion of any subject into a new "Blaine Bash Fest".

Is it really necessary? All it really shows is the poster's character, especially when it's a completely irrelevant and uncalled for dig. Come on, these Blaine comments have NOTHING to do with the subject at hand, so please, check them at the door, okay?

Funny... didn't get it until second read...

Amazing how technology has changed. The way Mr. Ed's mouth moved and now how animal animation is so real... ah computers...

Mr. Ed's Creator, Lou Derman, was one of the funniest close up performers of all time at the Castle with his "Friday Nigh Lou" shows. His brother, Bill Derman, no mean man with the pasteboards, was the Producer of the Our Gang Movies (and many others).

Bill's son, 'Nate the Great' Derman did pretty good stand up comedy magic, but seems to have vanished from the scene. Anyone know if he is still active?

Aside from those already mentioned, some other show biz folk with serious magic interests were Cary Grant, Richard Deacon, Carl Ballantine, Leonardo di Caprio, Rose Marie and (-oops, I can't remember her real name, only her stage name).

I'll bet that Pete Biro will remember her name. She went by Princess Hiawatha. What was her name, Pete?

Dick Van Dyke's billiard ball routine on that episode was good, but not "excellent". He did a 1 to 4 multiplication. Each ball was produced between the first and third fingers of the right hand, then the left hand would reposition it a notch up, so the next ball could again be produced between the same two fingers. I hate when people do this! BTW, was it Jeff or his father Art, for whom the "Altman trap" is named?

I saw the "Gilligan's Island" episode the other day when the trunk from "The Great Raftini" washed on sure. Ginger (ahhhh Ginger......) did the appearing bird cage. Gilligan was pushing an egg into his ear and pulling it out of his mouth. Funny, it didn't work when he tried to push the egg through the Skipper's ear. Go figure.

Then, they made Gilligan a coconut cake, but the coconut got switched with flash powder (thanks to Gilligan) and it exploded when he blew the candles out.

They did vanish Gilligan using the big box (don't know what it's called).

Interesting stuff!!!

In the great movie Maverick with Mel Gibson there are some nice card stuff.

I know that the royal prince (dont know his name for the moment) in England is very interested in magic. I read that he even practise some close up magic himself.

Jeff's dad is Art Altman, of Altman Trap fame (and the Art Altman false shuffle, in the Marlo Magazine).

Marlo often spoke with great admiration of Art Altman, and from the few written contributions by Art, I can see why. Jeff has inherited some good chops himself.

There is a great shot Jim Morrison floating some chick in mid-air. I don't know how deep he got into magic, they say he dove into occult books pretty heavy before fame hit.

Wow! Three replys in a row... Tom Arnold was a magic shop owner in the movie "The Ugly Kid". I own copies, but never really watched it, so I can't tell you what he does.

I don't presume to answer for Jon. He may have his own, first person accounting to relay or even some other accounting.

There's an author, Adam Gorightly, who wrote a book in which he says Charles Manson is, among other things, a magician. Be wary about the sensational aspects of such a declaration.

Read a small bit about it yourself at the following links:

http://www.konformist.com/manson-book.htm
http://www.mansonmythos.com/home.html

For more details than that, I suppose you'd have to buy the book and read it yourself. Personally, I haven't read the book and probably won't.

Best,
Ray

According to today's Washington Post, Michael Jackson (The King of Pop) bought $7k worth of stuff at Denny & Lee's in Vegas. Jacko, it seems, performs magic for the kids at Neverland. The imagination is having a field day! Don't suppose "The Real Man's Wallet" was among the items purchased? :p ;)

That story was also in today's Daily News (NYC Aug.22). ..Bought some "light-up gizmo he said his baby would love." Yes he has been sporting a newer royal infant Prince Michael II.. Also said he saw Sig and Cig in July.

Re Charlie Manson of Helter-Skelter infamy:

The allusion to "magic" and "conjuring" is mentioned in many reliable sources; however, the photograph (I think it was in a mag such as US) that stunned me was one of Manson, who at one time baby-sat convict's kids, performing a card trick for the children. He was holding a fan of cards...

The kids were goggled-eyed.
So was Manson...

...as usual.

Bill Derman, brother of Lou, produced the Dead End Kids movies was a magician.

Brother of? Lawer of? I used to work in this nightclub (1980's) and this guy who used to enjoy my walk-around antics worked at a videostore, and use to chuckle as Kevin Bacon (who lived on a farm nearby) would rent his own movies.

So you are two degrees of separation from Kevin Bacon . . .

Re: Actor Jimmy Stewart doing magic.

Didn't I read somewhere that this is actually not true and is the result of a mix-up back in the 1940's when someone accidentally inverted magician Stewart James' name when crediting something in a magician's magazine?

Or was it the other way around? Hmmmm.
