Davenports comes to mind as does International Magic . You WILL find them listed in the phone book there.

Davenport's is at one of the Underground stations... a big and easy to find one, but the shop is off to one side. You might want to look for their websites first and they would have addresses and maybe maps.

Of course EVERY MONDAY NIGHT is the Magic Circle and am sure you can "guest" your way in.

Two magic shops in London: Davenports is in the Charing Cross tube station (near Trafalgar Square) and International Magic, which is on Clerkenwell road.
I think Repro 71 has a shop, too, but I don't believe it's in central London. Perhaps someone else knows!

They used to be located at 48 Emu Road, but I'm reasonably sure they have moved. Their web site is at http://www.repromagic.co.uk/ , with a P.O. Box address. However, there is a telephone number there, as well as e-mail contact info.

Repro Magic is at 46 Queenstown Road in South London (http://www.faqs.org/faqs/magic-faq/part4/). It's not so easy to get to - I used to get the tube (subway) to somewhere like Clapham Common (Northern Line) and then walk a bit or get a bus. You could call to ask them or try to get hold of a map. I haven't been for years, but it was always interesting and I always got a friendly reception and a coffee.

Don's Magic Studio used to sell the Mephisto Huis range and was certainly expensive, but it depends what you're after. There too you need to get a bus, and I think you have to make an appointment in advance.

As far as Repro goes, they have some very different things not available elsewhere BUT you need to call Geoff first to make an appointment I belive as he no longer holds an open house but you will find him easy to talk to and contact.

Bournemouth's pretty far from London but Plymouth's ****ing miles!

Nearer the Capital than those two stores would be Alakazam Magic, run by Peter Nardi:

Unit 113, Ellingham Industrial Estate,
Eliingham Way,
Ashford
Kent
TN23 6LZ

& Kaymar Magic:

Kaymar Magic Company
189a St. Marys Lane,
Upminster,
Essex. RM14 3BU

In fact, Upminster is on a Tube line, so easy access from London but I'm not familiar with the shop.

I'm curious. Is making an appointment a common procedure at magic shops in Europe and the UK? I know it wasn't at Davenports (Betty was very nice to this yank). And yes, I did buy things!

I wonder if this isn't hastening the demise of "brick & mortar" shops.

I used to work in a couple of shops (Magicland in Dallas & Magic Etc. in Ft. Worth). I'm sure this practice eliminates a lot of magic loiterering but must also cut out some revenue.

I suppose between the net & catalog sales proprieters don't have to be as tlerant as they once were.

Not in the UK. But for a magic dealer who deals from his home address, not a shop, that's different.

Kaymar Magic is a friendly shop a stroll away from Upminster underground station and access is gained through the joke shop in St Marys Lane, both run by the larger than life mentalist Morley Budden. I have picked up some bargains there !!

Reminds me of the time Jay Marshall and I were in an underground train when the power went out. We were stuck for over an hour and it got so hot and sweaty you couldn't believe it.

However, Jay, incredible performer that he is started doing his usual funny stuff and kept the folks in our car laughing the whole time. :D

No better companian in a disaster than Jasper! :D

Do you actually OWN a map of England ;)

I would not call Bournemouth and Plymouth "close" to London by any stretch of the imagination. I would not even be too keen on a trip to Maidstone...
