David Acer Natural Selections
I just finished reading these books . I have not seen really any posts on these books, but I would like to say thank you to this guy. These effects in here, are quite frankly some of the most entertaining pieces of magic, I have read. I do not know much about David, and I missed his lecture (had to work) But it shows he is a real worker. I had been doing changing card in the machine for a long time never reading it print. and I read it here and immediately thaught hey I like the way this guy thinks, lol. I do have a kicker for him if I ever meet him for just this one trick. These are great books, one of the best purchases in books I have made in magic in a long time. If you guys havent seen them get them, or am I the guy talking about best kept secret books. if I am oops I will delete this post. thank you for taking the time to read this post. I am not the best typist in the world, and mu puncuation sucks. oh well, wanna see a trick. :D

Natural Selections 2 has some great stuff. Time Flies, Mail Fraud, and Double Vision are well worth the price of the book.

Re: David Acer Natural Selections
Thanks for the kind words, Reed and Mike (and for refraining from following them up with "NOT!"). There are certain tricks in each of those books that people bring up regularly when I lecture, but if I may, allow me to direct you to a couple of "sleeper gems" that typically go unnoticed. Natural Selections has a trick called "Initially Yours" that no one ever seems to try, but it's a boni fide killer (and it fools magicians too!). And in Natural Selections, Volume II, "Printed Matter" is a dazzling routine that we were actually considering releasing as an installment in Camirand's Masters of Magic series (in fact, we still might).
Now THERE'S an idea for a thread. Let's have authors direct us to what they feel are the hidden gems in their OWN books.

Excellent idea David. I really enjoyed the section in The Collected Almanac where Richard detailed his favorites.Originally posted by David Acer:

Re: David Acer Natural Selections
All right that was B.S. I read that trick, but I didn't see the impact in my minds eye. I went back and re-read it. I took the effect added an additional card, and took it one step further to fit my style. This trick I did close to fifteen times tonight and killed everytime. What a great piece of magic. I had girls absolutely freaking out. I have to say, Chicago opener the way I do it has been a favorite for a long time, as far as impact goes. I have to say, I think the impact of "initially yours" blew it out of the water. Thank you for pointing that out on the earlier post. he he those who dont have it have no clue what they are missing out on.
If you are intrested in that added kicker I have to the trick in number two, you call it ghost in the machine, I discovered this independantly, But I knew someone else had to of got it in print, I was tying my shoe in front of the ciggarette machine and looked up and said hmm I wonder, and halleluja I tried it and it worked. I now do it every night because we have several of the digital poker machines in the club. send me your e-mail address I will tell you privately the kicker for this it kills, if you are intrested try it once and I am sure you will agree.
These books rock David, I hope to meet you soon. :) ;) :p :o

Re: David Acer Natural Selections
Love these books as well, check out the following tricks which I like to do:
No Holes Barred - a great impromptu moving hole routine.
Emotional Bonding - A good plot for the fusion type effect.
Double Vison - A dunbury delusion effect.
Symmetry - Powerful impromptu version of Paul Harris's Twilight Angels.
Hofzinzers Delusion - Great transposition trick.
David I think the reason I read past Initially Yours was the use of the pen 'subtlety' (trying not to give too much away!) do you find it flys by them?
Also any latest news on your new book, will it ship in October? Really looking forward to it!
Rich.

Re: David Acer Natural Selections
that ruse is simplicity itself I thaught I would get caught the first time, and it flew by, zooom. That alone was worth the price of the book. I now have a way to get ahead when performing some other effects. KILLER KILLER KILLER. I feel like I just found a pot of gold. I think we should quit talking about these books. Other peopl who don't have them will go out and look for them. I Wand David to make some money, But I am feeling kind of selfish right now.

Re: David Acer Natural Selections
Reed - I expected a post that started with "that was BS" to be negative, but just as my lower lip began to tremble in anticipation of a painful assault on my character, my writing, and quite possibly my manliness, you turned it around you little dickens! First of all, regarding "Ghost in the Machine," I'm not the least bit surprised to hear that someone else has "discovered" it independently (and I would love to hear more about your kicker). Regardless, as you know, it's insanely fun to perform. Secondly, I am THRILLED that somebody other than me finally tried "Initially Yours." You've made my day!
Rich - No problem with the "pen subtlety." Not only have I never been caught doing it, I've never even sensed any suspicion on the part of the audience. Regarding the new book, based on Camirand's current publication schedule, I think October is a pipe dream. Looks more like February to me (I'm sorry to say). In any case, thanks for asking!

Re: David Acer Natural Selections
Ryan Pilling printed some great ideas using the "Ghost in the Machine" premise in Half-Baked magazine issue 3&4 with a great kicker by Nate Kranzo where you apparently get free soda!Originally posted by David Acer:

Thanks for the info David I will have to give Initially Yours a try, and as for the book if it is likely to be February I will see you at your stand in Blackpool for a copy ;)Rich - No problem with the "pen subtlety." Re: David Acer Natural Selections
I hate to say that I don't have that particular book, but I can say thanks to David for putting out "Cheap Labor" in the Magic Menu. I came up with a slighly adjusted handling and presentation that has gotten me a TON of mileage and shows from that one routine.
Thanks, David.
Rick

Re: David Acer Natural Selections
Hi Rick,
"Cheap Labour" actually popped up in both The Magic Menu and M.U.M. before finally landing in Natural Selections. I've seen a few variations since then, but I'd love to hear your approach.

Acer,
You'll do anything to keep this thread alive, won't you?

Is Natural Selections vol.1 still available? If not, are any reprints planned?
Thanks

Hi Getjet,
Volume 1 is out of print, though one or two magic shops may still have some on hand (I know Perfect Magic in Montreal has two copies left, which you can order online at www.perfectmagic.com). There are, as far as I know, no plans to reprint.
And Pete, WHY DONT YOU SHUT YOUR FACE!!!
Love,
David

Re: David Acer Natural Selections
I am having fun with this thread personally. I have to say Rink is a really neat thing also. I wear glasse when I perform, They add 20 I.Q. Points, which is good because my I.Q. Is like room teperature on a good day. The glasses are fake, but pull the look together.I do a thing where I load a sponge ball in my glasses, But the ring flight idea in rink is very cool. Bummer you are not going to reprint Volume one. Oh well thats less great magic for the others to do. But I have a copy MMOOOUUUHAHAHAHAHAH. What other things do you like out of the two books David?

Re: David Acer Natural Selections
Hey Reed - thanks for the info about glasses adding 20 IQ points! What do you have that will take off 20 pounds and 20 years?

Re: David Acer Natural Selections
lol When I figure the weight thing I will let you know, I am working on that one right now. I think I am the only fat guy in magic than can show my belly and get away with it. I have a whole deck of cards tattood across my stomach with a card floating over the spread. If I bend over the cards shrink, and if I stand completely up right the cards get really big. it is cool, and I think people realize I am fat just for the trick. lol So you might try that, it is all confidence right.lol :D
