Re: Now Let's Try: Best GAFFED Packet Tricks
I believe the trick was called "Last Monte" (or "Lost Monte") It was a gaffed packet trick from Nick Trost.
All I can remember was that it was the alternate I used in place of Daryl's Cardboard Chameleons.
If anyone knows were I can get a copy of the instructions for the Trost trick I'd love to have them. Oddly I can still remember Daryl's trick but not the easier gaffed one by Trost.

Gaffed Packets?
Randy Wakeman's, "Backs to the Future" is a goodie. Jim Pace's "Alien Autopsy" was a shocking (and satisfying) presentational reworking of the Wakeman handling.
Also, the Kaufman, Dingle, Krenzel "Holy P.O.D." from the Almanac is killer! Although I'm not sure it fits this packet trick criteria. I've used it sparingly in banquet work and will share a morsel of my work on it for those who are familiar:
Load the selection with the Marlo handling (which is in the "Collected Almanac") but use the Original gimmick. Now, in picking up the packet of supposedly 3 cards, execute Kaufman's "Double-Lift Shift" (I think it's in a "N.Y. Symposium" book, although I'm not sure which) with the two card packet in place of a double. This sets you up for the ending and provides a nice convincing show of the packet containing three cards. Table the pack, and continue in the standard fashion.
I'm aware of how cryptic this reads to the Uninitated, but if you know the routine, this should smooth out some of the clutter.

I found and old E & W trick that Michael Skinner had made up in plastic called Hole Card. Roger Klause and I were musing over it. Anyone remember that one?

Greg Eanes of Charlotte, NC, has a great handling of this excellent concept in his lecture notes. His routine is called "Holey POD, Revisited".

There is a great routine using the POD technique in Concerto for The Pasteboards. I have not the book with me because I am at my work right now so I can't tell you the reference. It is worth checking out. :)

Re: Now Let's Try: Best GAFFED Packet Tricks
As for the best gaffed packet tricks,I have never been much into packet trick. Why? I am not sure. I think many of them do not make much sense to me. The only one that I like is Wild Cards and one of my favorites is Eric Decamps' Jokers are Wilds. It gives solutions to all the questions I had about this trick.

There are so many great ones out there, most of which have been mentioned already. But one that has not been mentioned is Doug Conn's (original) Plastic Surgery from Jon Racherbaumer's MO volume 7. I have had more fun with this trick, both with magicians and lay people, than any other packet trick I own.

Re: Now Let's Try: Best GAFFED Packet Tricks
I still love flipped out fours. I make them out of bikes w/ sticky mylar. its still a great routine. I also love the old e&w effect 'sequence'. larry west was always one of my favorites. I can remember just about everyone of the emmerson/west packet tricks as they came out. used to love to see a new one of those little clear plastic covers over the black card cases that would dominate the counters at the magic shop in the 70's and 80's.
brother hammans blushing joker is another fun effect that I love.
hey my 1st post. although I 've been reading them a few months now.

Re: Now Let's Try: Best GAFFED Packet Tricks
I think Gipsy Curse is a great favourite with many of us. Because has the two ingredients: Very poweful effect, very ingenious method, has a little of card handling, and the presentation is memorable and has the feeling og non gimmicked cards , only are two cards that cant be examinated for for the public. The problem I think are the cards suplied, not very good for neat handling, but are very pretty.
Another trick is the ancient "Dutch Looper" selled by Ken Brooke that Pat Page has revitalized and I suposse will be the best seller was in Brooke times.

Re: Now Let's Try: Best GAFFED Packet Tricks
B'wave (NOT pronounced "Bee-Wave!!! It is pronounced as if Elmer Fudd is trying to say "Brave".) is my favorite packet trick. There has been many a debate as to which is better, B'wave or Twisted Sisters. While both are good, I think that B'wave is the better from a psychological stand point. In T.S. you have at least a 50/50 chance of hitting at least one card. In B'wave, you have a 25% chance of hitting the card, and if you miss, there is no out(as far as the spectators are concerned).
Re: Now Let's Try: Best GAFFED Packet Tricks
What can I say now that everyone has said what I was going to say?
OK, the ones I do...
B'Wave
Chase the Ace (Ken Brooke handling--even though big cards, Ken insists it is a close up trick--and it kills when the spectator holds the last card).
As far as Wild Card is concerned, IMHO the best I have done is Factory Rejects, with blank cards and a half card (Lee Noble's).
When I did trade shows, Sidwalk Shuffle is the strongest.
Fred Kaps doing Gypsy Curse... a baffling effect in his mitts.
Mike Close "Clones" is one I would like to learn that I think has great commercial potential.
bye :p

Ref Gordon's much earlier post from August 2001:
I fully agree that Paradigm Shift is a wonderful packet effect and in Gerry Griffen's hands it is a miracle.
Candidly, out of the many close up magicians I have seen over the years, Gerry ranks as one of the finest in my humble opinion.
His presentations are straight forward, tongue n'cheek and decidedly homespun.
His technique is glassy smooth and his magic is always uncannily fooling. I think he is one magic's best kept secrets.

Not sure if you would call it a packet trick, but I really like the one with the spider in someone's hand...heheheh
Anybody remember the dude from N.Y. (now deceased many years) who carried a briefcase with about 100 packet tricks in it? His show, at the Castle was done out of the case, one after another.
He was one of the very first guys around wearing all black. Looked a bit like T.A. Waters.

Re: Now Let's Try: Best GAFFED Packet Tricks
Although this started as a Roy Walton effect, I think the best gaffed packet effect is Rainbow Cascade. You have card change from face up to face down, and at the end, have a change of fronts and a change of backs. To top it all off, the cards are examinable at the end.
Incidentally, Chad Long's Shuffling Lesson is not a gaffed card trick. You can do it with any deck.
Bye for now

Re: Now Let's Try: Best GAFFED Packet Tricks
I don't do many gaffed packet tricks but have seen many performed. The only one which I use is Darwin Ortiz's Back Off; a lot of mileage from one gaffed card; with this routine you end clean which is an important factor for me. Lay people aren't stupid.
Elmsley's Dazzle is perhaps the most astonishing I have ever seen performed along side Darwin Ortiz's version for wild Card. Darwin's routine is superb because he gives the cards away at the end.
Brother Hamman's superb handling for the Universal Card is a visual treat; you sart with the deck in play and then use just a few cards; The effect is beautiful magic, check it out, it is in his book; beauiful routine. This is one I have used on many occassions with great results.
If you can end clean either with the cards or deck in play, then you have a real worker.

The Jennings' handling of "Back Off," which I printed in MAGIC, is superior to the Ortiz handling because it does not use a gimmicked card and achieves the same effect.

When it comes to magic methods, yes they are. Have you ever listened to some of the outrageous explainations that lay people give to the SIMPLEST tricks?
Besides, lay people do not know about trick CARDS. They are only aware of trick DECKS. Lay people can't concieve of the fact that so much magic can happen with only ONE trick card. Why do you think that people never say, "Let me see the cards" after doing B'wave, Twisted Sisters, Salad Dressing, Ricochet, etc. But you sure hear that plenty after doing Ambitious Card, Triumph, Chicago Opener, etc.

Just got and skimmed through Andrew Wimhurst's lecture notes, "Jiggery Pokery" -- what a great batch of material... especially his diabolical finish for the 3-Card Monte.
A must!

The Dominique Duvriere videoand card set for priting is great. Color Monte and 8-ball (both byEmerson and West) are excellet also. I liked the Stewart Judah monte, which ca e done with normal cads, but the set coes with cards that are better for it. Bob king's Drunken Blackjack is a real fooler. Finally, I friend of mine has "sorted affair", and although i am not big into oil and water, the climax is fabulous.

I perform 'The Whole Thing' more than any other packet trick. I think it's the one you talking about?!?!?
"Two cards with holes and two hole cards"
I also know of a local stand-up comedian/magician who does a jumbo version of this in his comedy bit.

I really like Chris Kenner's 3 Card Monte, which I do a lot for walkaround. Currently, I am doing Double Back for both walkaround and tables as often as I can.

Re: Now Let's Try: Best GAFFED Packet Tricks
When I worked at a magic shop in the early eighties, the packet trick craze was in full bloom. Of the dozens we had sitting in glass-topped cases, "Color Monte" and "Eight Ball" were by far the biggest sellers, but Tony Chaudhuri's "The Sting," Jim Callan's "Soup to Nuts," and Kirk Brewster's "Trapped" moved robustly as well. There were also fans of specific packet-trick creators who would buy up anything and everything by said creator (Ron Frost, Magic Ronnay, Larry West, Phil Goldstein, Tom Ogden, Meir Yedid, Nick Trost, et al) regardless of plot, or the fact that you might have to count nine cards as four...
Now tweeting daily from @David_Acer
Re: Now Let's Try: Best GAFFED Packet Tricks
This is going way back, but I kill all the time with Nick Trost's "Nutshell Monte," and I will buy all the workable copies I can find because I keep wearing mine out. I also use ESPecially Wild quite a bit, and the older Jeff Busby All Backs routine. Peace...Fred Reisz
Re: Now Let's Try: Best GAFFED Packet Tricks
Probably one of my favorite packet tricks is "NFW". My favorite part about it is that you are left very clean at the end. The effect is where you show you have four jokers. One at a time each joker turns face down. At the end all four jokers turn into four aces. Although this is a great trick, i wish they made it with four other cards besides four jokers.

My bias may be showing, but ask those that perform NFW regularly...They don't grab for the cards!

Re NFW
I once performed NFW for another magician and left the cards on the table when I was done. He picked the cards up and briefly looked at them (he was probably looking for double facers). He then put them back down. I thought that he had seen the secret but he commented to another friend of mine later that he had no idea how it was done.

Re: Now Let's Try: Best GAFFED Packet Tricks
I cast my vote for Hollingworths combination his quartet gimmick and his Wave=ing the Aces plot.
The effect is very similar to NFW (which I am also a HUGE fan of, although I do use a ungimmicked version of this that leaves you clean before the reveal of the aces.)
It was the handling he did on Worlds Greatest Magic 3 where the four kings turn face out one by one and in the end you reveal that the four cards are the aces, thus correcting the mistake of performing Waving the ACES with kings ;)

I always carry Monkey in the Middle (simply the best most visual effect I can name), Capitulating Queens and NFW.
My wallet carries a few others which vary, but if you ever catch me and I'm not in the shower, those three are with me!

(super belated) thanks... for the kind words (I just discovered this thread.)There are so many great ones out there, most of which have been mentioned already.

I' ve been using two great packet tricks for a while; one is Nick Trost's "maxi-twisto" which you can find in "The card magic of Nick Trost", p.222. The effect is basically "twisting the aces" where the aces turn FACE-DOWN one at a time but at the end, you turn the cards over to reveal a royal flush (5 cards). Instead of a royal flush, I drew little stick-men on blank faced cards, to fit the patter "I dont do this alone; I' ve got assistants...". The reaction is ALWAYS great! Highly recommended. The other one is called "For four backs" and can be found in Apocalypse vol. 7, no. 7(july of 84) by Ted Biet. The effect is quite simple; you show four blue backed cards and then the faces(four 8 of clubs). In a second, you show the backs have changed to red backs. Sounds like nothing, I know, but in performance, it' s pretty good. I changed it a little; I start with red backed cards and I say that these are marked ("can you see the marks? let me make them clearer for you") I then show the red backs but they' ve got big X's now. The reaction is ALWAYS good. I always carry duplicates of the gaffed cards in a himber wallet so if the specs wanna look at the cards, I can oblige.
Have a good day,
Sebastian
