Dice Magic Anyone?

Postby Guest » October 4th, 2006, 8:06 am

I have an incredible fixation with dice magic. Currently, as part of my performing repertoire, I am carrying casino dice for dice stacking and Bob Sheets' "It's the Rules!", Daryl's "Dicey Dots", Tenyo's "Dice Vision", and Alan Wakeling's "Loaded Dice". Can anyone think of anything else I'm missing? Thanks!

I enjoy dice magic...I use mini dice and a film roll container to do a dice stacking routine... its easy to carry around and appears much harder to do in specs perspectve than regular sized casino dice.I also do Paul Gertners dice to hat routine as well as coins across type routines ,but with dice instead of coins. Its fun to collect dice too... Ive found many styles and sizes that add to my already compulsive "magic stuff" collection!

Frank Zak has a quick little bit with three dice reminiscent of "two in the hand one in the pocket." It's on his lecture notes DVD "On the Boards" or availabe separately as a single manuscript for $5. www.frankzakmagic.com

Gotta get a shout out for the most ambitious dice routine I've seen. Four red dice are in a purse. Four whites on the table. Each time you stack the dice on the table, one changes places with a red in the purse.

It's Barry Govan's routine, and you can find it, and a lot of other die-friendly stuff at theambitiouscard.com. (if that doesn't work, drop the "the")

Camillo does one of the best dice stacking routines I have ever seen... I can't describe the changes, etc. but they are foolers.

Del Ray had some incredible gambling-themed stuff in his amazing close up act, well worth trying to find (there are underground tapes around).

I am working on several routines for the Chinese dice cup, known by many other names. Sure Shot etc. I think it is a great pocket effect that can be combined with many other dice effects.

Get this very inexpensive effect.

Anyone have any work on this email me.

1) Sacks Dice Routine (Bruce Elliot book) and all its current incarnations (Stewart Judah had a great routine in PallBearer's)...

2) Vernon Dice Climax (Vernon Book of Magic)

3) Charlie Miller routines for 2 in hand 1 in pocket (Magicana)

4) Audley Walsh Dice Tricks Pamphlet(Can't recall the name of the booklet, but it had some good things, including a trick called "The Patriotic Dice"...)

5) Marlo - "Shoot the Works"...

6) Senator Crandall - on "Dice Stacking" (Manuscript, with a cup and the dice)...

7) Jim Zee material on stacking...

8) Paul Green offers "Millers Dice" an effect by Charlie Miller...

How about a Matrix with dice (Stars of Magic, Bey's "Chink-a-Chink"routine, for instance).

There are lots of commercial effects for sale in the magic shops or at least there used to be:

1) Spots appear and disappear visually on a single black die (Lubor Fiedler if I remember correctly)- "Shock Die"???

2) a bunch of dice are stacked and they revolve with no apparent mechanism (Dancing Dice, Spooky Dice)

3) Irv Wiener - "Soft Dice" routine...

4) Heath's "Die-cyphering"...

5) Audley Walsh's "Crooked Dice" (A gag, really...)

Also effects by RW Hull ("Goofy Dice"), a Tannen effect with the dice penetrating a sealed glass jar, a prediction effect, a mindreading effect like color vision, miniature die box, color changing dice, linking dice(Leo Behnke,I think...), etc.

There are tons of individual things in magazines (Pallbearers had several great things!) and books that are not exclusively on dice - I have culled many of these for my files - this is just off the top of my head. I have a whole other file of dice effects and a couple boxes of dice tricks...

Milt Kort had a lot of work with dice, there is an Ali Bongo thing in one of Ganson's "Routined Manipulation" or "Art of Closeup Magic" series, can't recall which, Fechter had stuff worth looking for...

Keep reading, it's all out there, just waiting for you to find it!

There's also Paul Gertner's
'Triple Die-Lemma' in his book Steel and Silver.

It's also on the DVDs of the same name.

It's a fun routine.

Fernando Keops has a dice matrix
Daryl on the fooler dooler's DVDs has a couple nice ones as well.

Steve Forte has his protection video on dice and it's very interesting. my first glimpse of a butterfly cup. vol. 4

On Eccentricities Vol 1, Charlie Frye has a dice matrix that left me slack jawed...

the explanation was as entertaining as the trick.

Very clever.

Dice Bomb was a trick similar to the effect referenced in the earlier post. There was an effect that the die was thrown on a tray with a floral type background and then either vanished or mini dice appeared , etc.

Many good references here (and there are many more), but one very good effect is missing: "Poker Pot". It's basically a Boston box for dice used primarily in dice through table (and other penetrations, eg thru silk) and dice matrix.

That ad has started to appear in the magazines. It's a kit from Joe Porper that includes dice, a stacking cup and a loader insert that will produce one die at a time. Total price is somewhere around $400.

Porper's new Dice Cup does NOT automatically stack the dice. It is a new material used to make the cup, which I like a lot. The added bits include a loader that drops one die at a time to produce four dice, and a final load holder for a tall stack of coins (25 cent size). All new and original in principle and the usual high-quality craftsmanship.

Daryl's "Dice Chink-A-Chink" on the Fooler Dooler series is a wonderfully simple and effective routine based on the old "Chink-A-Chink", but done with dice.

It's actually my favorite Dice routine right now, and can be, as the title suggests, a real "fooler".

A dice cup and four dice, nothing gimmicked.

A mechanical version?

Joe Torres (?) used to sell a chop cup that had a loose inner lining on half of the cup. You would pull the lining inwardly, creating a pocket. You could then drop the dice into this pocket and sack the dice. However, there was no noise as the dice didn't have room to move around.

I suspect the mechanical version would just contain a square tube inside. You'd pick the dice up one at a time (feeding them into the tube) and then just lift the cup.

Hi Everyone,

It surprised me to see that Die 'N' Dice from Alan Warner Magic is not mentioned.
It is a very nice routine with lots of comedy and twists.

you can here read the effect;

The performer claims that this box contains THREE COLOURED DICE. He removes the lid of the box and tips out THREE COLOURED DICE and ONE BLACK DIE! Looking rather confused about this, the performer apologizes, returns the three coloured dice to the box and places the black die in his pocket. With the lid back in position on the box, he again makes the claim that the box contains THREE COLOURED DICE; but once more, to his embarrassment, THREE COLOURED DICE and ONE BLACK DIE roll out of the box and onto the table. This move is repeated several times, on each occasion, the performer becoming more and more exasperated as, repeatedly, a rogue BLACK DIE rolls out of the box with the THREE COLOURED DICE. In desperation, the performer finally concedes defeat. He now says that the box contains THREE COLOURED DICE AND ONE BLACK DIE!

I have personaly changed the coloured dice in one colour (white) because I think this make the routine much stronger.

The Alan Warner effect has been discontinued, and rarely if ever shows up for sale.
Considering how few of a given effect Warner actually builds, I doubt many folks have seen this routine.

After winning the lottery I'd collect the entire output of Alan Warner and Mel Babcock.......but for now I'll keep dreaming!

Two more:

"Loaded" by Mike Weber, from "Richard's Almanac", issue 23/24--July/Augustt '84

Paul Harris (in "Las Vegas Close Up", I believe, and also in "Art of Astonishment" somewhere) had a quickie effect where dice end up fused together with super glue. He told the story of getting even with an obnoxious pit-boss...

I performed KIRK'S KUP for years. It's a gaffed cup with a secret trap. Three dice, red , white and blue are shown, two tossed in the cup and one in the pocket.

The pocketed dice jumps back to the cup. This happens a couple of times -- then the three dice are thrown into the cup and when tossed out change into one giant die.

There's also DAvid Ben's 4-dice assembly in his book TRICKS.
