Horace Goldin's Mysterious Tricks

Dear friends, in case you haven't heard we've been running the "52 Weeks Project" since the beginning of the year, where we give away one free book each week.

We are currently in our 10th week.

Anyways, this week we have been going through Horace Goldin's "Mysterious Tricks" which contains many interesting effects ( https://amagicduck.com/products/goldin )

Among them, there is a very interesting personality readings system, based on the date you are born. It's similar to the the Zodiac. We believe you could potentially personalize it with your own name.

Other items that caught our attention:

Three Hypnotic Tricks - very cool pseudo-hypnosis stunts, where you can make people feel cold, hot, etc. I believe Jerome Finley used something like this.

The Penetrating Pennies - interesting coins through glass with coin shell

A Thought-Reading Trick - a "which hand" effect with two normal coins. The method is old but Goldin has a particular way of presenting it that I haven't seen before.

More Thought-Reading - a very clever and unique method to find a signed penny among a bunch of pennies. This is probably worth attempting in an informal situation.

The Vanishing Ring - a visual effect, worthy of a Nicholas Lawrence... it could be used for video or social media, who knows.

Another Ring Trick - an interesting ropes & ring effect, your hands are tied and the ring can be removed

String Magic - an interesting impromptu topological effect where a string penetrates the fingers. Could be combined with other effects to create a routine.

The Latest Disappearing Sixpence - an impromptu coin vanish using a napkin (or handkerchief); everything can be borrowed. We would like to hear if someone actually tries the effect.

A Hole in the Sleeve - a cute effect where a penny coin penetrates the sleeve

Keda - a "weighing the cards" effect, the magician is able to name how many cards were cut from the deck

Besides that the book has "The Four Coins" - this is the well known coins across where you put two coins "over your nails", that Harry Lorayne printed in The Magic Book. It's still a good effect. I wonder if Horace Goldin actually created the effect, my hunch tells me he didn't. Ray Mertz I believe used to perform it.

There is also a description of Goldin's show from the newspaper.

Overall I believe magicians that love magic are going to enjoy the book (it's free anyways)

In Mysterious Tricks (1930), I recommend The Latest Disappearing Sixpence by J.R. Findlay, page 17.
