I'm currently planning a once-in-a-lifetime trip to New York in December with my family. (I have been to the United States once as a kid, about 33 years ago, but not east).
As a hobbyist, I'm keen to visit Tannens if I can. Is there something else recommended (shops, shows or otherwise) if I can escape the family for half a day?
Any local knowledge is much appreciated, thanks!

There is a lot going on in NYC! Make sure to visit the Don't Blink Magic Shop and Magick Balay at 336 W 37th St Suite 960 9th Floor, New York, NY 10018. He is a New York City staple and one of the best demonstrators ever.
City Winery, NYC presents "Magic In A Bottle" a night of magic, comedy and wine which features some of the most in demand Magician and Mentalists.
You can bring the family and that show will be on December 26th.
The rotating cast of performers have included David Corsaro, Harrison Greenbaum, Adam Rubin, Peter Samelson, Eric Dittelman, Mark Zacharia, myself and other "names" you may know.
City Winery is located at 25 11th Ave, New York, NY 10011.

The must-see magic show in NYC right now is Asi Wind's Inner Circle, if you can get tickets. Great for the whole family!

And Monday Night Magic should be up and running in a new venue by then.

Stephen Cohen's "Chamber Magic" is highly recommended. I have been several times and look forward to going back again soon. It is "adults only" (there is no "adult humor," just an elegant and formal ambience to the evening). His rendition of "Think-a-Drink" is breathtaking.

My wife read about Monday Night Magic, I think, in a travel guide and I wondered if it was still happening. Will check again later in the year. And Monday Night Magic should be up and running in a new venue by then.
Thanks for all the posts so far.
Re: Magic in NYC
Thanks for the advice above. Went to Tannens today, and my wife bought me birthday tickets to Monday night magic at The Cutting Room. Eric Walton performed at our table, and Rocco (among others) on stage. Well worth it! And for me, a once in a lifetime opportunity. Hoping to get to Don't Blink Magic Shop sometime if possible.

Thanks for all the information. But isn't there a museum of magic in New York? I'm French and I'm planning to go there soon.

The Broadway Magic Hour with Jim Vines (me) and Carl Mercurio is currently running every other Saturday at 2PM at The Broadway Comedy Club near Times Square in NYC. It's a family magic show featuring magic, comedy, mind-reading and grand illusion. Drop us a message if you're planning to attend so we can say hi - we always love seeing fellow magicians at the show
