Please don't be sad. Mike Henkel is a Genii Forum member and is a very reputable and honest dealer. He sells a lot of stuff that's hard to find.

On the bright side: by putting the books on ebay, he's making it possible for those who missed out to not have to wait for the second printing.

Sad but expected. What’s worse will be when the PDF shows up in about a week. That’s about how long it took for Regal’s book to be pirated.

Peace, Joe

That’s fine if he sells at cost price. If he doesn’t then I am sad as others are. I really hope it goes for $300

He already has a $300 bid. And that doesn't even include buyer's premium.

Current bid = $560.

That buyer’s premium will be at least $260...

Anyone who pays $560 for a book on card sleights must be stark raving mad. Even $300 is a sign of mild insanity.

Anyone who pays $560 for a book that they can purchase for $300 is perhaps not stark raving mad, but certainly, as you might say, a little daft.

They are sold out so you cannot buy it for $300. You could wait for the second printing but collectors always pay a premium for a 1st edition.

Like I said, a little daft.
If any collectors want to purchase my 1st edition for $500 consider it sold. You will have to wait until I receive it however.
I will settle for a copy of the second printing.

This is not just a book on "card sleights".

Then what kind of a book is it? I was going to say "card tricks" rather than sleights but I understand the author doesn't do much in the way of card tricks anyway. And even if he did there are thousands of card tricks out there already. Why would anyone need any more especially for $560?

I was just making a point that buyers buy for different reasons. Some are collectors and buying the 1st edition really matters and others want the information and don't really care about the collectability.

I don't think going into a deep analysis of what this book offers is going to make any difference. The people that have bought this book will be very happy as I am. The end ;)

Does anyone actually read the books they buy for these atrocious prices?
This reminds me of the time I purchased a slim Jerry Andrus book from that old rogue Murray in his magic shop. Three pages were completely blank. I protested the matter to him and he gave me his stock response, "It's a collector's item!". He used that line whenever he used to sell something at an atrocious price and the punter complained. The only thing that was a collector's item was the fact that he used it to collect money for himself.
Where was his magic shop? BLACKPOOL OF COURSE!

I remember two magic shops in Blackpool. One was on Lytham road I think and the other near the pleasure beach

I suspect that many do not (as evidenced by so many shrink-wrapped books being sold off at a deceased magis' auctions), and probably even less actually study the books, and still less actually adapt and perform the material for non-magicians.

Nothing inherently wrong with that, of course. (See: Burger's "House of Magic" Postulate). If owning expensive, collectible books makes someone happy, who am I to judge?

I don't remember one near the Pleasure Beach. And in fact I think there was only one magic shop in town and that was old Murray. However, as I type I think I do remember one other shop on the Promenade that had a few tricks for sale although it was primarily a joke shop. I think it was called "Bill's House of Jokes"

Of course Paul Clive who wrote the classic "Card Tricks Without Skill" had a large wholesale place there selling tricks and novelties.

I think it was actually on the Pleasure Beach. There was a parade of shops outside the Pleasure Beach in front of the roller coaster.

I once ran a sideshow attraction on the pleasure beach. There was no magic shop when I was there.
With regard to the sideshow attraction it was something I invented and I believe could make someone a lot of money nowadays. I have already described the procedure here:

viewtopic.php?t=32776

It requires two people to make it work. One should be a really good close up magician and the other should be a really good hustler/salesman

I have it. I feel grateful that I'm in a financial place that I could afford this book.

A couple thoughts about it:

1. At first I skimmed over it looking at random pages and sentences. I was struck by how each thing I read was aimed at an issue I had experienced or was struggling with.

A simple example: How to deal with a break showing up along the side of the deck when picking up a jog when doing an overhand shuffle control. I've always thought that was a real problem. As I said I just glanced through the book and he mentions the same issue.

There were other comments like that.

2. Decided to stop skimming and start in at the beginning.

I am only 60 or so pages in but its already been worth the purchase price.

As I advance in years I am more and more preoccupied with things that I think are true but just maybe aren't. How do you find out some cherished idea or belief you have is simply false? Not always easy to see.

It helps when someone who has put in the work comes along and points you in the right direction. Mr. Forte has uncovered several things that I considered true and presented me with another way to look at it.

3. I thought the advertising on the website was a little "off" when it he mentioned that with a little practice one could learn things in the book. Going through the section on how to practice and just touching upon the riffle shuffle basics I am beginning to see what he was saying. There are small touches presented that will improve the look of what you are doing but aren't going to take years to master.

(I'm sure there are hard things to learn as well.)

Simply put, this is the book I have wanted since reading Scarne's claim about dead cutting aces back in 77.

Can't wait to get back to it. Gotta pay the bills though:)

Yup, it's expensive. But it was also expensive to produce. Books had to have reinforced sewn bindings, and all that enamel stock! Yikes!
