Announcement regarding new Steve Forte book

Postby Jason England » January 23rd, 2020, 8:26 pm

Gang,

I just got off the phone with the man himself. Here's the scoop:

His website, www.gamblingsleightofhand.com will go live on Saturday, Jan 25th. The site is up now but is password protected until then.

Once the site is live, you may pre-order the book. The cost is $300.00 US plus shipping. Shipping cost will depend of course on where you live and which carrier you use (USPS, FedEx, DHL, etc).

Books will be shipped in the order that they are purchased.

The books should arrive in Las Vegas at Steve's house on Friday, Feb 7th and will begin shipping as soon as they can get them unpacked, inspected and signed (if desired) before packaging them for shipping. Steve says that they anticipate the first copies going out on Monday, Feb 10th.

Once you have the books in hand, I estimate it taking you 10-20 years to fully digest all of the information contained within.

Good luck.

Well, there goes 300 bucks. I guess I'll have to wait a while before feeding my Lego addiction.

An interesting wording." Looking forward to ordering a copy."

Before the internet and before most people had credit cards, you browsed the catalogues or magazines, read and reread the ad, wrote out your order, got a postal order or wrote the cheque and posted them off to the dealer. A few days later (if you were lucky, sometimes a lot longer) the package or parcel would arrive. Up until the very point of opening it, the whole process was in the ordering.

The anticipation, thinking and dreaming of the wonders on their way to you, all part of the process of ordering.

All too often what followed the opening was something else entirely.

No reflection on the book, and no intent on going off topic, just an observation on Christopher's post.

Do I need this book? - no.

Will I be ‘ordering’ a copy? - very likely.

So much for 2020 being my ‘getting rid of stuff’ year...

The videos on the site are fun to watch. I'm tempted to buy this book, even though my main focus with card magic these days is on tricks that take place in the spectator's hands.

Here's the description to the "splitting the aces" video:

"Here’s a twist on cutting to the aces called ‘splitting to the aces’ (page 864). The deck is boxed and split to an ace preceding each riffle. Incidentally, about 75 ace-cutting stunts are presented in chapter nine."

For those who asked, there is a full TOC on the site as well as sample pages. (No 10 Card Poker Deal in sight! ;) ) The videos are really something--that "Super Deal" is very cool.

While it would have been great to have had a companion video set released concurrently (for the reasons Mr. Forte details himself on the site), I'm hoping some of the material can be seen in the GPS set he released years ago.

In any event, very much looking forward to this (over 100 pages on Erdnase...Yay!)

To quote Mr. Forte on his research and conclusions about Erdnase:

The 130-page chapter essentially addresses one question: Was Erdnase a cheater who plied his trade with moves and systems that he invented? Unfortunately, my findings suggest that Erdnase was neither a cheater nor an expert at the card table! I expect this chapter to jolt many cardmen.

Whew! Eager to learn more about this soon!

From the website ...

If you wish to have a book inscribed, just enter "inscription" with your first, or first and last name, and I'll take care of the rest. Or, enter a complete inscription in the box and I will copy the inscription verbatim.

Hmmm, verbatim.

Let me see ...

"To my best friend and mentor, Brad Jeffers, the greatest sleight of hand artist I have ever had the pleasure to witness. The man who taught me everything I know about handling a deck of cards, and without whom this book would not have been possible."
~ Steve

Yeah, that's the ticket!

At $300 plus shipping I think there will be rather a lot of hesitation. If they do sell out that means the book will take in 300 grand! Methinks there will be no rush over the matter. If there is that means that magicians are dafter than I thought! I still remember an old grafter and ex magician years ago telling me, "Magicians will buy anything. If you advertise gold plated thumbtips they will purchase them just because they are gold plated!"

Anyway, at that price we should at least know how many pages are in the book. That little detail seems not to have been mentioned.

Ah! Two books! That is better I suppose............
And a substantial amount of pages.

Still expensive but far more bearable than I first thought. I bet the shipping costs a fortune though! Especially overseas.........

Books like this are like a freeroll to me.
I purchase it, read it, study the parts that are of particular interest to me, and when done, if I wish, I can usually sell it for more than I paid for it.

Likely only a day or two left before it's gone.
I'd certainly never count on a reprint if this book was one I wanted on my library shelf.

Well, even if anyone were to take the number of pages into account, by my calculation, it would come out to about 27 cents per page. Each page is, in essence, a lesson. For those who are really into the realm of what Steve does (and one would be hard pressed to argue that anyone on the planet does it better), how can you beat that deal? And then you have this beautiful book in your collection for life, unless you decide to sell it, and at that point, there's a good chance it'll be worth more than the current price.

I deal in antiquarian books as well as magic books. If I applied that philosophy in my line of work I should be buying 1930s thesauruses, dictionaries, and bibles by the ton load. I could retire early!!

That is a very good line. I must remember it the next time I write an overpriced book with very few pages. Thank you very much for it. I expect I can use it.
