Joe Ovette - Dr./Medical Practitioner?

Postby Diego » August 14th, 2019, 2:43 pm

I was wondering if anyone ever heard that the late Joseph Ovette, had any standing/experience as a doctor, or any kind of
medical practitioner?

Ovette performed his crystal gazing act as, "Marjah", when he wasn't doing his regular magic act.

Did he ever use "Dr." with his name?

Correct. If anyone has any references/info about him also having medical training and/or practice, please share.

Nothing I have seen suggest this.
What makes you think he could be a doctor?

In a 1925 news story in THE BILLBOARD, following a cyclone in southern Illinois, a number of show people helped in the aftermath.
It noted that Marjah, "who in real life is a graduate physician, who was put in charge of the local hospital, performing many operations..."
Keep in mind there were several mindreaders who were using the "Marjah" name, to feed off the success that Ovette had created for the name. Could have been someone else. Also the reporter may have simply got names confused. That's what I'm trying to find out.

True.
From The Sphinx:
"Marjah (Joe Ovette) says that so
many mindreaders have taken the name
of (Marjah) that he has decided to name
one of his dogs—Marjah."

Not sure if being a, "graduate physician", is the same as being a actual, certified Doctor of medicine.
Although many mindreaders/crystal gazers used "Dr." titles in their work, they did so with degrees from diploma mills,
that offered degrees of Dr. of metaphysics, or Dr. of psychology, (before the title was protected like Dr. of medicine). But I have never seen so far, Ovette or any Marjah using a "Dr." title.

Wasn't Ovette a Canadian from Cornwall, Ontario, Canada? If so, the nearest medical schools would have been in Kingston, at Queen's or Montreal at McGill. Ask them.

My dog is also a doctor, Dr. Doolittle, but he never went to university, except to take a pee in the park. However, he is a mindreader, too. He knows when I know that he needs to go for a pee. Magical! :o
