Modern Authorized Jerry's Nugget Cards

Postby erdnasephile » June 11th, 2019, 1:36 pm

Behold... https://www.jnplayingcards.com/

(Will this test the resolve of those that normally would disdain Kickstarter? ;-) )

PS: Lee Asher Conjuring Arts’s subsidiary, The Expert Playing Card Company is the company behind the KS.

Unlike many Kickstarter entities this group has a strong track record for successfully producing exactly this type of product.

I don’t know that the boutique pasteboard market is one that appeals to most of the people here, but I wouldn’t think concerns over realization and delivery would be warranted in this case

I read that this new edition won’t be identical to the originals but updated for modern times and tastes. Doesn’t that mean that only the back design and perhaps the faces will be the same? So...anyone desiring those good old decks won’t be getting them. Correct?

Just trying to understand the purpose of this new release...

Have you handled authentic jerry’s? They look great but are pretty awful for most applications. I think the look with a different stock and finish will likely be an improvement for anyone wishing to use them.

No I haven’t handled them. Why are they so much in demand if they don’t handle very well?

They are in demand . . . . because they are in demand. Does that make sense?

It's like Paris Hilton, who is famous for being famous.

From the website:
What is the point if they aren’t identical with the originals?
– In the 50 years that the originals have been around they have become Iconic, but they have also become very collectible and expensive. This production serves two purposes. One, to bring the feel up to date for today’s tastes (they will be Thin Crushed), and to make them affordable enough for everyday use.

Because when a lot of us were starting we saw these in use by cool magicians. Then lee Asher managed to build a little cult of interest around them that made younger generations interested. Their rarity made them desirable.

It’s the look. It’s the association with an era. It’s rarity.

Okay, I got it. Thanks for explaining that to me. I assumed that the increased value had something to with them being the most wonderful deck of cards in the universe and handle like no other. And, of course, supply and demand...

I think one of the reasons they caught on is that they were one of the few casino decks that didn't just look like the boring Bee backed cards. Others from this era I really like are the cards from the Golden Nugget (Green, Brown, Red, and Black) and also the Stardust hotel (white backs).

I lucked into a bunch of sealed Jerry's. Some I bought cheap before they became cool. One deck showed up because my father made the acquaintance of a friendly dealer there who offered to send his magic boy some old cards. To Mr. Henderson's point, I actually don't care for the stiff feel of those cards.

In fact, the deck I'd most like to see replicated are the old Aristocrats. They handled great and the back design was perfect for Harris' Sidewinder. The reprint from a few years ago had colors changed, etc., which I didn't care for. I wish they would have just stuck with the classic design.

I don't like most of the cards made by this group. The decks are way too thick, and the cards way too stiff. Not great for my style of sleight of hand.

$12.00 for the ugliest cards ever made? Can't wait.

I wonder how this will effect the selling price of original decks of Jerry's Nugget cards which can go for as much as $500 apiece.

I hold the same opinion as Bill Duncan. These are indeed some very unattractive cards!
The only use I have for these and other cards of this ilk, are in packet tricks such as Poor Charlie.

I believe the cards will be printed by USPCC and will handle the same as the high quality cards that come from them.

I really like the shade of blue used in the jerry’s And the backs have a certain appeal - but admittedly different than most back designs. I wouldn’t say they are ugly (to me). Unusual, yes. But that can be good

Part of made them look cool to me were those great Bill Taylor photos in the Frank Simon book.

You are in good company. Bill Goldman and Daryl used to use them in their packet tricks before the prices went through the roof.

Between Kickstarter and $12 a deck, easy pass.

I’ve backed dozens of products on kick starter, and only one failed to deliver-and they offered a refund. I think the problem isnt with Kickstarter, but with magicians who don’t know what they are doing in the first place trying to use Kickstarter. The team that is making these cards know what they are doing. I don’t think it being on kick starter should be the issue.
