What’s with his lack of popularity amongst magicians? It borders on antipathy.

I can't speak for anyone other than myself, but I bear no ill will or antipathy toward Shin Lim. In fact I am quite happy for him since it is obvious that he worked hard to achieve his current fame. Good for him, and good for magic. Even so I do not care for his style and never have, at least since I became aware of him several years ago. There's no apparent passion in his performances, and he comes across as cold and distant. But considering how he is lauded by the general public, I am most likely missing something. So too bad for me.

I like him a lot.
I was trying to come up with the last time a professional stage magician made a career from nothing but cards. I had to go back to Cardini. Surely it can't be that far back, could it? Who else?

Blaine, pretty much in his early years. He wasn't a stage magician, and neither is Shin Lim.

Cardini did not work with nothing but cards.

Darwin Ortiz? Jason Ladanye? (but I wouldn't categorize either of them as "stage" magicians)

I thought of him as well, but remembered he featured also cups and balls, flea circus, etc.

Earlier in his career, Jon Armstrong wrote he performed exclusively cards, but I think he was close-up and parlour mostly as well.

Re: Congrats to Shin Lim!
Naming people who are not stage magicians won't advance this thread.
Ricky Jay most often performed as a stage magician. Albeit it was often a small stage, but he performed on very large states as well and often with only a deck of cards (and some windup toys and a watermelon).

Yes and... I considered that as well, but all things considered I'm not sure we can get much closer to the standard as set than Mr. Jay.
