The Genii Forum’s Review of 2018

So here we are in 2018 … wait … WHAT? 2019??? When did that happen?

Oh well. So here we go again. A quick recap of the year that was. 2018. I am among those who—for the most-part—wish it good riddance. Harry Anderson, Ricky Jay, and Pete Biro all died this year—Harry and Pete bookending Ricky. I knew all three and called one a good friend. All three are gone, but never to be forgotten. Each left his mark (and in all cases, marks) and not just in magic. There were, of course, some other decent and interesting moments here on the Genii Forum in 2018. And they were all because of you, the members who participate. Thank you for that. Now please enjoy this annual look back in time.

Some Rest for the Weary

For the first time in who knows how long, Steve Bryant, the purveyor of all that is great at Little Egypt Magic, takes a month off from … well … purveying. There is no January 2018 update at his terrific site. He had a good excuse: he was moving from one corner of Little Egypt to another. He was back in February and hasn’t missed a beat since. For reviews, news, and generally positive thoughts on magic, catch up with him at http://www.littleegyptmagic.com/magic.html

That’s a Good Start

Charlie Chaplin may have been the biggest star of his time, but the undisputed king of early cinema comedy has to be Buster Keaton. This clip of some of his stunts in narrated by the man himself. He brings up Houdini, who, so the legend goes, gave young Joseph Frank Keaton his nickname. Toward the end of the clip is an illusion filmed during the silent era. Those who argue over who created it these days should take notice.

Visiting the Chamber of Secrets

We get to spend some quality time with California TV legend Huell Howser as he visited John Gaughan's original shop and museum in the San Fernando Valley. It's a wonderful way to spend 27 minutes.

My But That Was Quick (Part One)

A joint project between Art of Play and Pitchford Entertainment, Media, and Magic, 2,500 replicas (in poker size) of Cardini's cards were reproduced and sold for $15 a deck. An email ad from A of P went out on 2/8 and a notice posted to the Genii Forum early the next day. Before the end of that day, the cards were sold out.

Making History by Documenting History

Kenrick “Ice” McDonald’s documentary film, Quiet Masters – The History and Relevance of the Black Magical Artist is released on Amazon Prime television.

Netflix Magic, Take One

Derren Brown’s show, The Push (To The Edge) appears on the streaming television service Netflix. More Netflix Magic from the British mega-star is planned.

Never Too Late for the Good Stuff

A clip from 2015 is recently uncovered by Forum member Dick Hatch: David Williamson and Colin Cloud on a “Google Talk” video. It features performances by the Williamson and Cloud, which are followed by an interview. It was done during a West End (London) run of "The Illusionists."

Apparently one can purchase a DVD-R copy of European Nights from somethingweird.com for $10. Why would we, you might ask? That is the film in which Channing Pollock performs his seminal act.

Just Months Before His Own Appears …

Ricky Jay pens an obituary on Dick Balzer, the former chairman of the Magic Lantern Society of the United States and Canada, and Mervyn Heard, the former chairman of the Magic Lantern Society of Great Britain, in The New Yorker. There is, of course, some scholarly words on Magic Lanterns from the erudite magician.

“Fake News” (We Used to Call it “Spin”)

The media’s favorite headline regarding David Copperfield: “Magician David Copperfield Forced To Reveal Secret To Trick”

No, he wasn’t. The actual method of getting those people to where they were running to get to the back of the theater was never revealed. Judge—no pun intended—for yourself :

Going, Going …

The auction of Bill McIlhany's massive collection continues with a two-day sale starting on Saturday, April 7 and continuing on Sunday, April 8. Conducted by auctioneer David Goodman (http://www.magicauctioneer.com/), this third installment of the overall auction—the first, also a two-day affair, was held in September of 2017 and the second in November 2017—was held at historic Owen Magic Supreme in Azusa, California.

More Venues Equals More Gigs

The House of Cards in Nashville, Tennessee, opens for business on April 9. The magic-centric nightclub features food, drink, and, of course, close-up and platform magic.

Well, at Least the Name’s the Same …

A DVD version of Doug Henning's The Magic Show finds its way onto Amazon Prime streaming television. It’s a shell of the original Broadway production, but it is Doug Henning in his prime, and there is a lot of fine magic.

The Hat Takes His Final Curtain

The death of Harry Anderson rocks the entertainment world. Only a few in his inner circle knew that he had suffered a stroke earlier in the year. The star of television and magic was only 65.

Great, Greater, Greatest

Richard Kaufman announces that Kaufman and Company will print a further-expanded edition of Greater Magic by John Northern Hilliard.

“Unlike my 1994 reprint, where everything was in one volume, the new reprint will be two volumes. This is because I am going to add several hundred additional pages to More Greater Magic, making it too large to bind in one volume.”

He alludes to the hope that it will be printed “later in the year,” but the new volumes are scheduled for publication some time in 2019.

Return To Magic Island

The original was in Newport Beach, California, but the longest running Magic Island was in Huston, Texas. Now, years after it closed, the iconic building may be set to reopen, again:

How Are His Numbers?

It’s doubtful his magic will change the overall polling numbers for congress, but (like every other representative whose constituency thinks is great while disliking all the others—hence the perpetually terrible national numbers for our legislative bodies) his district clearly loves him. That’s the Wisconsin’s 2nd’s Mark Pocan, who features a “Magic Monday” segment on his Twitter feed. The video is from November 5, his “Election Week edition.” The Gentleman from Wisconsin was reelected on November 6.

Ricky Jay

The death of Ricky Jay catches the community of magic off guard. Truth be told, Ricky probably would have preferred that the community of magic not be told at all.

A Lot of Weber and a Little Bit of Magic

Ricky Jay, One More Time
In what unexpectedly became his last acting role, Ricky Jay will appear sometime during the third season of the Amazon series, Sneaky Pete, a program about a con man. The part, a character named T.H. Vignetti, was to be a recurring one. Show producers will be “adjusting season three” as a result of Jay’s death. The next season’s premiere date is still to be determined.

A Fine Lineup, Including a Surprise

The 2019 TAOM convention in San Antonio, Texas announces its lineup:

Richard Turner
John Cornelius
Stuart MacDonald
Chris Capehart
Earl Nelson
Nick Lewin
James Dimmare
Scott Pepper
Joe Givan
Mahdi Gilbert
Oscar Muñoz

The impressive list includes one whom few have seen in quite a number of years, and created something of a stir when announced: Earl Nelson.

He Plays the Drums, Too

The multi-talented Jeff Altman resurfaces now and then (it was usually on the Letterman Show, but now that all late night TV is virtually dead …). This time it was on a blogger’s site:

The New Yorker Notices …

The Illusionists troupe made its way back to earlier successes: Broadway. Reviews are good, but many reviewers, including Elisabeth Vincentelli at The New Yorker, also notices that UK/Las Vegas performer Chloe Crawford has minimal stage time:

"The show's biggest trick is not one to brag about, though: the troupe's only woman, the "sorceress" Chole Crawford, vanishes after about ten minutes of stage time."

It’s Not Just for Spring Break

The 30th Palm Springs (California) International Film Festival will be honoring the late Ricky Jay with an award in his name:

“This year, the festival will also have a new honor, the Ricky Jay Magic of Cinema Award, named for actor and magician Ricky Jay and in honor of a film made by a master filmmaker that exemplifies a pioneering spirit in furthering the language of storytelling and the magic of cinema. Like much of the work Ricky was associated with, the films in consideration for this award exemplify this spirit and continue to remind us of the dream that is storytelling on the silver screen.”

To Absent Friends

Room 1419 and One Final Lesson

It is wholly appropriate, I think, to share Dr. Ricardo T. Rosenkranz’s remarkable essay about the passing of his friend and mentor, Eugene Burger as we list those in our community who died in 2018. Eugene wanted to teach his friends, perhaps all of us, how to die. His death was almost a year and a half ago. It seems like yesterday. We can only wonder what tomorrow will bring. Please take a moment to remember those who died this year, and/or think of their families, friends, and fans who will never forget them (and please forgive me if I missed someone):

What was the story with Rachel Colombini?

I seem to remember reading that she had died on Facebook.

Then somebody (Paul Gordon?) posted to say that he thought she was dead as well, but then was amazed to actually bump into her at a magic convention.

Now - it seems she really did die. With Paul Gordon going to the funeral.

Can anybody clear up the sequence of events? I am very confused.

In early 2018 it was reported, by trustworthy people as well as family, that she had died. That report was wrong. Later this year (sometime in the fall I believe), she died. It was Paul Gordon who proved (photographically) that she was alive in February, and it is Paul—a true friend to Rachel—who verified her passing this time.
