This is the book from the McCord Museum. Attendees at the Collectors' Conference received one.

Good to know it is available. I knew one existed, but figured that I'd have to go (online) to the museum gift shop to locate one.

The image on amazon is not what the book looks like. There's no dj. It's a black cloth cover with blind stamping.

Perhaps the Collectors' attendees received a special edition versus the trade edition.

I think there is only one edition. The image on amazon doesn't match the product. It's also a lot cheaper on amazon.

The book's description on Amazon seems to be the same as listed on the museum's site. The list price on Amazon is $10 less than on the museum site but Amazon is selling it at a nice price.

Eventually, we will get to the bottom of this I suppose. Is it possible that the one on Amazon is a second edition published for retail site sales and has a different cover?

No! Amazon will use a stock image if the publisher doesn't provide one.

So what do you think this book is? Is it your feeling that it is not indeed the same book?

It's the same book. As Richard mentioned, Amazon created their own image.

Tracking by ISBN, find same book, same price with free shipping, available from Walmart.

The McCord Museum is in Montreal and its prices are probably in Canadian dollars. Which might explain the price difference.

I ordered the book from Amazon a couple of weeks ago and, as others have said, can confirm it is the same as the one available from the McCord Museum.
There are in fact two different books available but the only difference is that one is in English and the other in French. Everything else about the format, binding, etc is identical.

It's a gorgeous book. The black cover with gold detail is part of its appeal.

The two Potter & Potter Nielsen poster books are very nice! Lots of posters in those books not published before.

100 years of Magic Posters by Reynolds immediately fails any comparison because it's mostly black and white.

Shame on me for not mentioning the Potter&Potter Nielsen books.

Today (well, yesterday, it's after midnight) is my birthday, and one of my presents was the McCord book. I mentioned it to my wife during the week, and Amazon brought it this afternoon while my son and I were at the movies (Wonder Woman -- good flick, check it out).

This is a nice book. Lots of posters I hadn't seen before, lots I had, very nice reproduction, high quality printing. It's big, but not so big (like the Taschen book) that you can't sit it in your lap and read it. The essays are engaging (it's always interesting reading people who don't have a conjuring background write about it, and getting things almost right). Very pleased to have it.

My edition of the Reynolds poster book does not, I believe, have 62 posters in color.

Only one way to find out for sure. :)
Or, buy mine (paperback edition) :) :) :). Mine's also signed by both Charles and Regina...

When one asks which book of this kind is the best, I wonder what the criteria would be. Choice of posters, quality, posters and print together, and so on.

For me, the first edition gigantic Taschen book may have to be the winner. I have not looked at the Potter and McCord books yet so I can't have an opinion until I take a look at them. That being said, the largest Taschen book is tough to beat.

The Reynolds book may have been a big deal for its time but not anymore really. Not enough substance there IMHO.

Another thing is that needs to be considered is the size of the posters in these books. The Taschen book(s) have a wide variety of sizes.

Here are more possible considerations used to rate these poster books.

Do the posters in the book provide a chronological history of magic? Is the book just a pretty coffee table book or informational? Are the posters included nothing more than a bunch of posters available to the book's creator or a carefully planned selection representing the best of magic through the ages?

In essence, whether or not the book tells a story.

So, if we are to rate these poster books, we should use a serious worthwhile list of criteria rather than how many are in color and such although that can certainly be one factor. Agree?

I browsed through the McCord museum book today and I found it to be quite nice! Cloth bound heavy book with lots of terrific posters. Perhaps a bit brief on the written word considering that there are conspicuously blank portions of pages which could have been used to say something.

It certainly ranks as one of the best poster books I have ever seen. That being said, I would rate the original gigantic version of the Taschen book as the best out there.

Well worth the money and a great addition to any magic library.
