Re: Monkey Copyright?
Astonishing - and political. PETA acting as trustee for rights/property of non-human non-citizens. Do fruit flies and mice have rights to the profits derived from scientific research and testing?

Rights/Responsibilities - unless you really want to hear demands to grant your intestinal flora civil rights and medical benefits ... ??? What about the mitochondria? Whatever you do costs them their efforts and lives. Won't somebody think of the mitochondria?

At least we can all rejoice in the news that a federal judge has ruled the lyrics to "Happy Birthday" are in the public domain. We may now sing the song to each other without fear of being sued.
Really:

Re: Monkey Copyright?
Strangely though, the court ruled that there had never been a valid copyright on the song's lyrics, but that the copyright on the song's musical arrangement was apparently valid, meaning that if we sing the tune we might still have to pay the piper - unless, of course, the particular singer is tone deaf.
Re: Monkey Copyright?
I read this somewhere a few months ago and thought it had died the death. Silly me. What next? Royalties for animals featured in photographs, paintings, on mugs. Tee shirts? Reindeer on Christmas Cards? Let’s hope so.
I started singing “Happy Birthday” to the tune of “We Wish You A Merry Christmas” (aka The Figgy Pudding Song) years ago. Works well enough.
I’m sure there’s somebody (probably a monkey organ grinder) somewhere who can prove they wrote it in fifteen hundred and frozen to death. And claim the royalties.
Then there’s this:
We all love the Genii Forum,
We all love the Genii Forum,
We all love the Genii Forum,
So sing it out loud.
Repeat.

Re: Monkey Copyright?
I asked the monkey if he'd trade me the copyright for a banana. He "seemed" in agreement... I mean he took the banana after all.
That mean I own it now?

Re: Monkey Copyright?
I think someone should get an African male Elephant (the biggest thing on four legs, two legs, bunches of legs) and get him to take a selfie with his trunk. To this purpose: In court, the elephant in the room, for once, could be addressed properly.

Re: Monkey Copyright?
From where or whom did the monkey get the camera? I believe the owner of the camera should sue the monkey for its unauthorized use.

Re: Monkey Copyright?
LOL! A very funny image: The elephant in the (court) room. But if there was a trial, there would be a lot of grey areas, and the proceedings would probably be trunckated, but undoubtedly unforgettable, at least for the elephant. (*Insert collective groans here ______________)
