Jim Steinmyer ROCKS!
I love the way he thinks about magic.
The excerpt from his book, Hiding The Elephant...
The interview...
The three tricks...
My favorite issue for some time now.
Excellent! :)

Re: Jim Steinmyer ROCKS!
Does anyone do the Steinmeyer trick with salt and pepper? I don't know the name, but it's similar to "Powers of Darkness," in which everyone sees how it's done except the onstage volunteer.
Re: Jim Steinmyer ROCKS!
Dear David,
I do a variation of the piece called 'Five Senses'. I have performed it for one week last year in the Parlour of Prestidigitation at the Magic Castle.
Best regards,
D

Re: Jim Steinmyer ROCKS!
"Five Senses" is a SUPERB routine (you have good taste Sir Groves!)
Anyone that likes &/or performs "the paper balls over the head" would do well to research this brilliant construction. The effect is as super-strong and Steinmeyer's typically brilliant presentation is icing on the cake.
Regards,
Doug Conn
PS: Jim printed this in an old "Conjuring" column in Magic mag. It's also in a set of his lecture notes (the name of which escapes me.)

Re: Jim Steinmyer ROCKS!
I read "The Five Senses" in Magic magazine and loved it.
I tried to work it up on the street, but found that it didn't work when the slightest wind swept up, because the blindfolded volunteer could smell the pepper. Then I realized that I already had an exposure trick in my repertoire (Paper Balls Over Head), so I let it drop. But it's a great piece, and the construction is, as you say, brilliant.

Yes, RK. It arrived in Annapolis on Saturday, 10/18. Please don't overlook "Genii Speaks," as it frames the Steinmeyer text beautifully. Also, a great "keeper" from Roberto Giobbi. :D

Steinmeyer arrived in Vienna, VA (Fairfax county suburbs) on Saturday 10/18.
Since I know it doesn't come from DC, I presume that's helpful info.

Re: Jim Steinmyer ROCKS!
I just finished reading the interview. While I don't envy David Regal having to do all that typing, it's fun when what you are typing is pure gold. What a great, fun career Jim Steinmeyer is having.
And Pete, the photos are really gorgeous.

Read the interview, read Jim's new and mind-tweaking book, reread the interview, and then spend a year in deep meditation.

Re: Jim Steinmyer ROCKS!
I haven't received the issue, but I finished reading the book last night. Superb. Each chapter begins with a quotation from a magician or magic thinker, and the chapter entitled "Solomon" quotes David Devant:
"A conjuring performance cannot be properly appreciated by anyone who does not know something about the art."
I truly believe this. No, it's beyond a "belief" - I know it from personal experience. I was an indifferent magic audience before I took up the study of magic. The craze for "secrets" - the idea that ignorance is the basis of wonder - robs people of a knowledge of one of magic's fundamental beauties. Magic is more wonderful, more impressive, when you have some idea of the thinking and creativity behind it.
Every magician should read this book and be perfectly conversant with its contents, and recommend it to laypeople, and give it out as a holiday gift. It's the perfect antidote to masked-magician shows. You get the "secrets of magic" all right, but set in their proper context within magic's rich history, and explained by a knowledgeable, personable, respectful guide.

Jim hit my porch today... have to take a break from reading... Regal MUST HAVE a voice recognition system, right?
Stay tooned.

Re: Jim Steinmyer ROCKS!
Because of Regal's new writing gig on the TV show "Whoopi," and the time frame, David's wife Leslie did the transcribing. The transcription was then reviewed and edited by David, myself, and finally Jim Steinmeyer.

Got my issue in the San Francisco bay area today.
The article on Jim Steinmeyer was awesome. I've only been subscribed to Genii now for about 5 issues. I used to buy it at the local store but the depth and breadth of articles didn't keep me buying it, let alone subscribing. Genii under the new ownership is simply amazing.

Re: Jim Steinmyer ROCKS!
Can someone give me the heads up as to what issue of Magic the Steinmeyer routine (salt & pepper) is in?
Re: Jim Steinmyer ROCKS!
"Salt and Pepper" is written up the July 1997 issue. There is also a MAGIC issue with Jim as the cover story (September 1996). You can order back issues from the MAGIC website (click on the BACK ISSUES link there to get to the page to order it).Originally posted by Fraser Gould:

Thanks Jon,
My collection of Magic Magazine starts in 1998 (the year I moved to Japan). I'll add that particular issue (along with the Michael Finney and David Williamson issues) to the list of back issues that I will someday get around to ordering.

Re: Jim Steinmyer ROCKS!
"Jim Steinmeyer ROCKS" is well said but he rocks for more than just the reasons posted in this thread.
As a creator of magic as well, I have found Jim to be the "Kingpin Creator" as well as a darn good guy. He was kind enough to take time from his busy day and respond, IN DETAIL, to a few of my emails giving me support and killer advice.
For a gentleman, at his level, to give back the way he does, is just as cool as it gets...and ROCKS!
Thanks Jim for everything you do for this insane industry.

I'm such a night-owl that the only possible way for me to witness a sunrise is to become so absorbed by something that I just don't bother going to bed at all.
The Jim Steinmeyer issue of Genii arrived yesterday.

What an issue! What a year! The Al Baker issue. The Ross Bertram issue and now the one with Jim Steinmeyer. Really, really good. No need for a December - I've gotten my money's worth already. Thanks!
