Love the trick, but I don't understand why there is that small hole in the middle of the frame.

I suspect that the hole is the key to the trick. I think I figured it out!

Matt, I don't think so. When he drops the small piece at the end, it falls cleanly away from his fingers. Spit wouldn't have held it, and any adhesive substance wouldn't let it drop away so cleanly.

The hole is there for misdirection, I suspect.

I don't think the trick can be done without that hole. I wish I could spill the beans but if I do, they will throw me out of the Magician's Union. :D

What does the hole do that merely dropping the piece on the table wouldn't?

If you drop the piece, it must land somewhere. The hole eliminates the need for it to land.

You need the cover so you can do something sneaky.

I think Sugawara's stuff is really clever, but for some reason, this one didn't do it for me.

However, this Sugawara deck penetration effect on the Seo Magic site fooled me (assuming the top card and bottom cards appear normal close up):

This one really fooled me as well:

Um, I'm not trying to be facetious, but did that actually fool anyone?

I'm assuming we shouldn't post solutions here, but it's a tad transparent...

It's certainly not one of my favorite Sugawara releases.

For me, his MYSTERY DONUT tops his FORTUNE DONUT Tenyo release. In fact, it can fool someone who already owns Fortune Donut. Very clever and one of his best post-Tenyo releases in my opinion.

It's the musical accompaniment which does it for me.

Got mine today. You do not drop and pick up the piece. It's much more clever than that and it should not be performed over a table so that doesn't occur to a spectator.

You never drop the piece.

So I was correct on that detail. Then my theory on how it works may be correct.

It's more clever than that, however I showed it to both my wife and daughter. My wife was able to duplicate it immediately.

I like this trick. Fooled half a dozen people with it so far.

One thing is I don't offer to let them handle the apparatus after the trick. They seems satisfied that they've already done that beforehand.

And the extra hole is great misdirection.
