Nudity in Magic
Re: Nudity in Magic
Noting in the news that The London Sun, will now have their "Page 3" ladies covering their previously exposed breasts, is a reminder that Siegfried and Roy's show, "Beyond Belief" at The Frontier Hotel, actually took an innovative step by NOT having their showgirls bare-breasted...which was radical for a Las Vegas production. While there were different reasons for this change, many felt it enhanced the show.

Sounds like a perfect theme for a gala at 'The Conjurors Convention' in October, or maybe a new FISM category...

Still no comment on the South Park item??
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=34KcjPVd69A <- Not safe for children.
anyway ... magical effect and "what you imagine" versus lowest common denominator base/taboo appeals. one could as well comment on hands as if wearing gloves were the norm. Downs and his jacket and all that.

I always keep my clothes on when I'm doing card tricks. It just never seems appropriate to do otherwise, especially since my keenest spectator is my mother in law.

Re: Nudity in Magic
When Lance Burton was still doing two shows a night, the earlier one with the assistants clothed, and the late show with them topless, I went to one of the late shows. You could feel the discomfort among the audience.
It also made for a crappy show. Tops on, ladies! Much better for the magic.

When The Playboy Clubs across the country were closing in the mid-80's, someone said it shows either being jaded or that we're growing up.(!)
Some would say WHY/WHAT does nudity have to do with this show, magic or otherwise?
Fact is, nudity has been a factor in many production and burlesque shows that magicians performed in. I remember a production show at the old Aladdin Hotel in Las Vegas, that had many standard illusions used in the show, but it was never listed as a magic show or a show with magic in it.
Clothes on or off, many shows thru the years, have seen the value of advertising/presenting shows with a cast featuring, "Mostly Gorgeous Girls".

Re: Nudity in Magic
While female strippers have performed magic, does anyone know if male strippers ever do?

Re: Nudity in Magic
I had the dubious pleasure of creating some stuff for "the amazing randy" for a late night tv show called Eurotrash. A naked male magician who had a very adult magic wand; the act wasn't invented for the show, he did work and perform like that out in the real world.
Peter Brynolf used to have a vanishing silk routine (not unlike Ursula Martinez) which also involved items of clothing vanishing and ultimately the silk appearing tied to him.

Remember Harry Anderson's legendary reply in Showtime's "Bare Touch of Magic" as he viewed a bare chested lady holding an Abbott's Botania...
"Topless, smoshless, you'vd seen two you have seen them both".

Isn't the line, "If you've seen one, you've seen them both".
Re: Nudity in Magic
In its latest edition, the Times puts the record straight, saying its sister paper, (The London Sun) had "made a clean breast of it and admitted there's still some nudes to report".
Noting the above, it is a relief to know that The London Sun, is staying the course, adhering to it's core values, while too much of society, is continuing it's downward path, a clear result of what happens when compromise and situational ethics are the norm.

As for male strippers who also do magic.... someone I was married to once got into magic after seeing a male stripper who turned out to be a well known Sydney magician...

...and then there once was this guy who shed all of his clothes, appearing only in tight-whiteies. A clever tool that allowed for wonderful mis-direction, as another "off-stage" helper loaded predictions into a locked crystal box.

Except there were "predictions" that happened after the undies-moment.
