Zarrow tip in Doug Edward's "Nukes"?

Postby erdnasephile » September 23rd, 2014, 1:22 pm

In this month's The Linking Ring, Rolando Santos says there is an previously unpublished tip Herb Zarrow gave to Doug Edwards, which Mr. Edwards published in "Nukes" https://www.vanishingincmagic.com/magic ... rds-nukes/

I learned the Zarrow shuffle from David Ben's Genii article and his big Zarrow book. It's hard for me to imagine another unpublished tip, given the enormous amount of detail in those two resources.

I was wondering if anyone owns Nukes and the Zarrow book. Is the Zarrow tip in Nukes really unpublished? Is Nukes worth tracking down?

(I'm asking because my local magic shop doesn't have Nukes).

It's certainly possible. Sometimes Herb would watch the way you did the shuffle, and on the spot give you a tip that he felt suited (and would improve) what you were doing. But it's not necessarily something he did.

Vanishing Inc. has a download of Doug Edwards doing the Zarrow:

Jim:

Many thanks! -- that exactly answers my question.

I'm not sure though if I prefer the finesse in question--it looks a bit unnatural to me for some reason.

So far, the best I've seen (on video) are Mr. Zarrow and Mr. Plants. Still waiting to see Steve Reynolds' version.

I saw Herb do the shuffle many times:

A: It is not one of the more difficult sleights to master. Compared to most Palms, Passes, Culls, and sleights along those lines, the Zarrow Shuffle is much easier to learn.

B: I never ever saw Herb do the shuffle the way Doug Edwards does in the video demo.

It's really unimportant whether we like the tip Edwards is selling: it works for him. Maybe it's what you need for your Zarrow Shuffle.

Fair point, Richard.

I admit it's probably a trivial question, but I'm always looking to improve what I do, so the LR report intrigued me.

Actually, Curtis' review makes the book sound pretty good, so I may hunt it down.

Disregard the Herb Zarrow / Doug Edwards "bow" at your own peril.

I had watched the demo multiple times and was intrigued. Then Greg Eanes, a particularly skilled sleight of hand expert from Charlotte, NC, showed me his result of working with the bowed version...and it was a complete exoneration.

I was sitting across the restaurant table from him, so at a low angle, not looking from "on high", and the bowed card completely hid the reality of the two packets merging. I'm just telling you what I saw...and I've been doing, and paying attention to, the ZS for thirty years.

I've got no dog in the fight, I'm just reporting how good it looked to me.
