I am looking for an effect to illustrate a concept that I am teaching in a network security class.
I am looking for something where a tube is shown empty. An object (ball or cube, but NOT a silk) is dropped through the tube unchanged. When the object is dropped through the tube again it changes color (or some other property.)
I am vaguely aware that there might be some commercial effects that are similar to my description, but I have no specific knowledge of what these tricks are or who carries them.
Other considerations: The presentation will be “parlor” style for 15 to 25 people. The tube is important for the illustration. A 3 inch to 24 inch tube would be ideal. I will be carrying this internationally - so easy packing is a plus.
Any ideas or thoughts will be appreciated

All you need is a tube with a hole in the back through which you can stick your thumb.

Newton's Nightmare has a cool looking blue tube and the metal plug visibly slows down going through it vs. a regular speed when gravity grabs hold. Great trick yet no color change.

Damian, I have no doubt that your idea would garner attention, but I have this vague sense that I would like to keep teaching for this client

Re: Help in selecting a trick for my class
Dick Oslund in an MUM column a few years back had knots appearing when a rope was passed thru a tube.
Dye tube would work.
color changing knife would work...maybe a bit small tho.

Thanks to all for your ideas and suggestions!
I have a couple of months to put this together, so I have some time to process your ideas and continue my research before deciding on the best illustration.

Did you ever hear Doc Eason tell the story of the the time he performed "Kate and Edith" at a corporate event not knowing that they had just settled a gay hostile workplace suit. It's pretty funny - as long as it happened to somebody else
