Re: Hofzinser's Rose Mirror
A good place to begin your search is in the Richard Hatch translation of The Magic Of JN Hofsinzer. The Apotheosis of the Rose. You can find images of props in the Albo books. Vol 2 has the write up.
Bartl made one with a silver handle that comes up for sale occasionally. It was manually operated. Voit made one a few decades ago. It had a clockwork mechanism.

Hi Victoria.
Your post is rather off-topic, but welcome all the same. I've worked with Franz quite a lot over the years (as a guest performer and videographer). When did you work for him and in which part of the world are you?
Okay, back to topic everyone.
I seem to recall John Carney telling me that he was working on a version of this whilst we were poking around John Gaughan's old shop one day a few years back.

Re: Hofzinser's Rose Mirror
Quentin - heretical press? is that Steohen's new a to religious label?
Carny presented the mirror at a history conference recently. Did a great job.
Masa,
Robert Albo was a major collector of apparatus. he wrote and published a series of books detailing the expanse of magical apparatus. It is a great source of information and leads for those interested in such things.
Bartl was an early maker of magical apparatus.
Voit was a magic dealer'producer who flourished a few decades ago. (if he is still in business, I do not know.)

Re: Hofzinser's Rose Mirror
Zauberzentrale München is definitely still in business, though there doesn't seem to be anything on the website about a version of the Rose Mirror being for sale.
It does seem though that the last volume of Magic Christian's Hofzinser trilogy is finally available in German:
http://www.zauberzentrale.de/shop/Literatur+%3Cbr%3Edeutschsprachig/Non+Plus+Ultra+3%2C+J.+N.+Hofzinser%27s+Salonkunstst%FCcke+%282+Bde%29.html
They say it took far longer than expected (it's been 6 years since Volume 2) because of all the research Magic Christian had to do into manuscripts written by Hofzinser and his pupils and held in private collections - far more than were previously assumed to exist. Volume 3 is actually two separate volumes, and there may be another supplement still to come dealing with the latest research. I don't know whether this new Volume(s) 3 has been translated yet.

I have the new Hofzinser book(s) by Magic Christian and he devotes 17 pages to the history of the rose mirror. It's a very interesting read (but it's in German...)
The Rose Mirror that was sold by Zauberzentrale München was available in the late 1980s/ early 1990s (I still have their catalogs from that time), but I don't know how long they were available exactly... it was manufactured by the ingenious Tony Lackner, who died in 2009, unfortunately. He was a great craftsman and had a true warm-hearted nature. Sadly, his wife died shortly after and since they didn't have any children I don't know what happened to his estate... so I don't think that any comparable quality will ever be produced again...
Unfortunately I don't own one, because I couldn't afford it as a teenager and my magical interests lay elsewhere back then...
Re: Hofzinser's Rose Mirror
Masa,
You options seem to be three:
1. Buy a previously made mirror
2. Have one custom made
3. Make your own
If you have someone make one for you, will you have a dimensioned drawing for how you want it made? If so, and you want it mechanized, does your drawing reflect the actual sizes of the motive power or is it just a daydream motor? If you are without such info, do you realize that development time will add greatly to the cost?
Do you plan on using it and do you have a routine in mind? How you plan on using the mirror could well affect workings and dimensions.
For visibility Martin's rose/pad is very practical.

Re: Hofzinser's Rose Mirror
Any thoughts on using the cargo net/mesh/slat effect and silk screen printing to make a closeup version? Are 1/16" slats fine enough for closup work?
