Doug Thornton wrote:I clicked "Today's Active Topics" and was admonished "Sorry but you are not permitted to use the search system." I am using Firefox. I CAN see and access the "Recent Posts" on the right.

Same thing happens to me:

As of today, after logging in, I can no longer see "Today's Active Topics" list.

I get an error message saying I'm not allowed to use the search system. (just like Doug)

Weirdly, if I log out, I can now view "Today's Active Topics"

In addition, I also can no longer post a message with an attachment.

I just checked using IE. I can see Active Topics, and Search functions for me as well. However, while I see the orange shapes where the buttons are, none of them have any text identifying what they do.

Among the other strange things that started around 2:00 p.m. Central today, the Edit button is missing, links to member profiles no longer work, if you do find a link to a profile the message returned is, "You are not authorised to view the member list or profiles."

OK, like erdnasephile, when I log out, I can see the Active Topics page. Curious. Also, in case you haven't looked there recently, on Richard's thread titled "I am loved by a Woman Trolling the Magic Cafe", I wrote the name of a magician who used to post here and was banned and it came up "[censored]". <--- (And that is a quote of what came up...instead of Mark and then his last name Lewis, it appeared as [censored].)
Also the "Edit" option does not appear on my posts...

I can only access search if I log out.

This points to something being wrong with search permissions, probably on the "registered users"group from the Admin control panel.

Yes, much better. Except I still can't edit my post -- either in Safari or Firefox. I have the Delete and Report icons, but not edit.

Added: I can edit the post (as I am doing now) by modifying the URL -- but the icon is missing.

That's odd because I've been using Firefox with no problem. Are you on a Mac? Maybe it's a problem for Firefox on a Mac.

Safari on iPad 3, Firefox on Windows.

I suspect it works for you because you're in the Administrators group, I am in the Registered Users group. (On the boards I run, I set up a separate login that mirrors regular user accounts so I can see what a regular user sees permission wise. Just a suggestion.)

When doing a Search, I get this reply, even though I see the truncated reply:

"No posts exist inside this topic for the selected time frame."

Is this due to a Preference setting?

Steve, have you chosen a Forum or area from the menu? If you don't choose where to search, it won't show any results.

Not so. If one goes to search and only puts in a search term, the default is to do a board wise search.

While one can drill down and search only various sub forums, it's not like the olde system that forced one to do so.

I just tested it with two search terms ("ortiz" and "magic") and got the expected results (i.e. searched the whole forums going back to the beginning by default).

Is the post counter broken?

My last 6 or 7 posts say 754--but that can't be.

When attention to mobile access begins:

1) the forum takes FOREVER to load.
2) when you look at today's active topics it lists the topic and the person who started the topic, but not who made the most recent post. So you check it out and see you waited 90 seconds to see content already viewed.

Just wanted to share that while on a real computer.

We know there are problems with mobile access. I never realized that so many people post on the Forum using their phones.
We're working on it.

Neither did I, but I notice at any given time more than half my forums users seem to be logging in from a mobile device.

It's why I added the free (for the forums owner) "tapatalk" capability. It's one of the few add-ons that is really easy to install (basically one uploads a single file directory to their forums files) and doesn't screw things up.

And another equally easy/free (for users and forums owners) solution is to simply offer an additional style (user selectable) that's optimized for mobile. I've tested and used this one and it works great on mobile devices. Adding a style consists generally of just upload one file directory to one's phpBB installation and then activating it.

I second the Tapatalk suggestion. The forums I run have Tapatalk enabled. The site logs show a huge number of people using it during the day. Simple and free.

Well not free for the end user. They do have to pony up a few bucks for the app. Well worth it though.

And the additional mobile style could also be added for those who don't want to spend the few bucks.

Either way (or both ways) is much better than trying to come up with a style that looks good at all sizes (even down to tiny iphone screens)

Be nice if it just *worked* at all on an iphone. I don't like mobile versions of sites, and just want the main version served up.

I am viewing the forum on Opera Mini, and it formats nicely and loads quickly.

Opera Mini (and the desktop browser for that matter) is free, comes with a lot of nifty features, and Opera has been a favorite of mine since the desktop version 3 way back in Win 3 days.

Might be worth a look, I have a speed dial setting for recent topics and that's working correctly now as well.

Regarding private messages. I did receive an email stating I had a message but nothing on the forum page gave any notice. Is that the new norm?

Tom, I think that is a setting you can make yourself. Not sure. When I get PMs, I receive an email, but no notice upon coming to the forum.

That's correct.

The first option notifies you by e-mail.

If you select the second option, you'll get a popup notification, but only if you have set your browser to either allow all popups or popups just for this site.

The new system doesn't work that way. Not without programming modifications that can make future upgrades more difficult.

I visit the forum and read a post. To reply, I have to log in. But when I do log in I get bounced back to the main page and I have to navigate to the post that I had been reading. Is it possible to set up the forum so that the log in keeps visitors on the page they were already reading?
