UPDATE: Jay Marshall has died
Just heard Jay Marshall in hospital. No information on why, etc. Anyone know what's up?
Stay tooned.
Re: UPDATE: Jay Marshall has died
Spoke with Jay on the phone today. He said, "I ALMOST bought the farm, but am still here. Should go home in a day or two. They don't know what the cause was."
Stay tooned.

Re: UPDATE: Jay Marshall has died
Oh man (heart in throat)... some years ago at a magic convention that had Sir Jay as MC I was browsing around the dealer room and bought a photo of a magician doing magic in a parlour setting. The period was obviously around the 1930s. It's a very neet photo (I have it framed here in the studio office).
Pete Biro and I were trying to figger out who the magish was when Jay Marshall walked up to see what we were doing. We asked Jay who he thought the magician might be and he said,
"Well, I don't know who the magician is but the table he is using is a P&L Economy Table from the 1930s."
Get better Jay!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: UPDATE: Jay Marshall has died
Hope to see him (and hear another of his usual risque but benign jokes to satr things off) at next Saturday's lecture. He's one amazing man who knows everyone and who is loved by everyone.
Re: UPDATE: Jay Marshall has died
Not a copyist, but I just spent two days in hospital... had just finished watching Paul Daniels "Malini" at the Magic Castle... and a good friend (a Dr.) said, "You go to the ER right now." (I was having chest pains).
So I did. After two days of tests and a lousy bed, all is OK. Had an Atrial Flutter (valve acting up) but all is OK after treatment.
Phew!
Thanks to Dr. Bill and Larry Horwitz for Pushing me to good health.

Fours hours later, he's walking pass me in the casino with a handfull of chips!

Re: UPDATE: Jay Marshall has died
Magicam posted this in another thread, but I want to keep all the news regarding Jay in one thread (all of this corresponds to what I've heard):
Please keep Jay in your thoughts and prayers. Clay
Received from Patrick Murphy in Chicago:
I just returned from hospital. Jay was admitted about a week ago. He was not feeling well. At this point the doctors are not sure how much longer he has. They have him hooked up to all kinds of machines and they are feeding him through a tube. I am writing just to let you know what is happening. I feel you should here it from us over here rather than through the grapevine. At this point whatever infection Jay had has spread through his body. I really don't know anymore than that. Jay's mind is sharp...BUT his body has grown weak. Even though he cannot speak...you can see how he feels in his eyes...well EYE at this stage of the game. He has pulled his tubes out a few times so he has been restrained. His grandson Chris has smuggled the cat "Bongo", named after Ali into the hospital a few times on Jay's request.
Please feel free to share this info with those concerned. As I said, the doctors are not hopeful. BUT we have heard that people have pulled out of this to go on and live 12-15 more years!!! So here is to the power of positive thinking...for Jay, for Lefty...
Yours,
Patrick and Cindy

Re: UPDATE: Jay Marshall has died
Hello Magii,
Just back from the hospital and Jay looks much better, awake and alert. The Dr's last night were not very optimistic, but today he has much more energy and there is still every reason to hope for a positive outcome. When I went in earlier I told him he looked great and the nurse, in that consescending tone they have, said, "yes, Mr. Marshall is much more alert today," and Jay flipped her the bird behind her back. So that was a happy sight. When the Dr's said they don't know how long he has they meant it could go either way. Last night it was a little touchy, but this morning it seems to be going much better. We all hope for the best and for now things are going as well as can be expected.
Thanks for your concern. I'll be back to see him in an hour and will tell him that he's in your thoughts and that wishes for a speedy recovery are coming in from all points.
Warmest Regards,
Chris Marshall

Re: UPDATE: Jay Marshall has died
The reports of my father's demise have been GREATLY exagerated.
He is resting comfortably in the hospital. Those that saw him a few days ago, when he experienced a critical episode seemed to have over reacted to what was a temporary incident. I am here on a trip I scheduled about a month ago as I am helping him out with the magic business. My brother, Sandy and his wife left New York today on a planned trip to California.
(I should probably introduce myself, I pretty much gave up performing magic in the second or third grade after a successful performance to my class of: Forgetful Freddie (a birthday present), Al Baker's Diminishing Cards and Ring around the Rosie. My career was in the chemical manufacturing business.)
We are meeting with his doctors on Monday to get a diagnosis and prognosis and we will keep those interested informed.

Re: UPDATE: Jay Marshall has died
James, thank you for the encouraging words, and we all hope for the very best.
Although you gave up magic at an early age, I did greatly enjoy seeing Sandy perform at the Magic Castle some years ago. I've often wondered if HE stayed active in magic. Any update?

I spent quite some time with Sandy Marshall last summer when he came to the Edinburgh Fringe with his bioshow of John Lennon (which is _excellent_). We talked about magic several times, but he never mentioned that he used to perform.
Now he is a successful producer with _two_ Emmys to his name.
Best wishes to everyone chez Marshall.
Take care, Ian

Bongo may be better medicine that most doctors are willing to admit. If Jay Marshall says he needs the cat, isn't anyone else just second guessing?

Thanks to all for your concern.
He has been stable since I last posted here, and seems to feel better. (He's been asking how much this is going to cost him) I told him he has insurance for the hospital, but his biggest expense is having to charter a 747 for all the nurses he is inviting to accompany him to London in July.
He doesn't look real good because he has IV's running for nutrition and medications and has had nothing to eat or drink by mouth for two weeks now. When he is asked if he needs anything he told the first person "money" since then he asks for "WATER"
Now we have gotten a diagnosis of ischemic bowel for my father. This is some sort of decrease in blood supply to the bowel, possibly with some sort of blockage. He had a CT scan initially and was supposed to have another one yesterday to see if this condition was improving. His blood pressure dropped some so they did not do the test. When I visited this morning blood pressure was up and they planned on doing it this afternoon.
I will post updates as I have them.

Re: UPDATE: Jay Marshall has died
Greetings Magii,
12:00 noon, Friday May, 6. Just back from the hospital and Jay is looking much better. He's talkative and alert and wants to get out and go get some lunch. David Meyer, the publisher of Magicol, visited while I was there and tried to tell Jay some jokes but Jay beat him to the punchline each time. Though his mind is sharp, he's still quite weak and talking tires him out so don't bother trying to call. But he looks and sounds much better than last Thursday and our hopes are still high. He will certainly need some rehab to get back on his feet after being in bed for over two weeks now.
Cards are coming in from all over. A big one with about a thousand signatures arrived from the FFFF and Jay was glad to see it. Penn and Teller sent a jar of rabbit's blood from their wood-chipper act, with a note that they could send more if he needed it. The shop set up a table at the Knights of Sleights flea market last night and many of Jay's old friends came up to me with well-wishes which I conveyed to him this morning.
Not much else to tell right now. The Great Jasper is resting in bed getting slowly better. There were fewer tubes connected to him today, which makes things easier on him and us. Thanks for all your concern; the kind words of so many friends are heartening to us all.
Till next time,
Warmest Regards,
Chris Marshall

Very sad, this is from Maria Ibanez
Greetings:
It is with a deep sadness that I pass along word of the passing of the Dean of Magic, Jay Marshall. I received word just a few minutes ago through Ken Sheets who was phoned by Tony Dunn letting him know of the passing.
No further details are available at this time but I will pass them along as I get them.
A great loss to the magic world and to those of us who were fortunate enough to have known him. Our prayers go out to his family and countless numbers of friends world wide.

Re: UPDATE: Jay Marshall has died
Why is this man smiling? Because he was in Las Vegas kicking tail and taking names in the casinos, and he was surrounded by people who truly loved and revered him. You cant ask for better than that. Our little community has experienced a huge loss, but what a tremendous life we have to celebrate for generations to come!

I got an email from Susan Marshall this morning. When she and Sandy were in Edinburgh last year I was commenting that I had never seen Lefty. Luckily, this year I got a DVD called How to Speak Like a Dummy (on vent) which had an interview with Jay and a clip of Lefty. I think I'll dig it out later.
Best wishes to Sandy, Susan and all the Marshalls.
Take care, Ian

I cried everytime I saw Jay and Lefty sing together. Now Lefty's lost his "handler". And I'm crying again...
We are less because of the loss of one of the greats. I will cherish my photo with him, my conversations with him, and my lifelong memories of Sullivan, Magic Inc., and Conventions.
Thanks Jay for making the world a better place.

Re: UPDATE: Jay Marshall has died
I arrived at the magic shop with my 7-year-old daughter Nina in tow. (Being a divorced dad I see my daughter every other weekend. So Nina, against her will on some days, spends every other weekend with me at the magic shop.)
As was customary on Saturday mornings Jay opened the back door in naught but his Polar Bear nightshirt or was it his Christmas nightshirt? My memory fails me. I will have to consult with my daughter. I am sure the image of an unshaven, half asleep Jay Marshall in his rumpled nightshirt and varicose veins is burnt into her memory. There are some things that children should NOT have to witness.
Jay looked down at my daughter and asked, "Does she do magic?"
My daughter looked up at me as if to say, "Daddy PLEASE don't sell me to this scary old magician! I am too young to travel!"
I smiled and said, "She does a great Squared Circle."
Jay nodded his approval.
"Good," he said, "The Bozo Show is taping in the back today and they requested a girl magician."
Nina rehearsed all morning, using the props at Magic Inc. That afternoon she experienced her first bout of stage fright and learned what it was like to play straight woman to a clown.
Jay Marshall was responsible for getting my 7-year-old daughter her first national T.V. exposure and I was given the memory of a lifetime.
Jay was always good to my daughter and I. He always asked how the divorced life was going. He always went out of his way to ask how my daughter was doing...
HEY! Wait a frickin' gosh derned minute...MAYBE that horny old bastard had designs on dating my daughter when she was of the proper age!?
Or MAYBE just maybe he was concerned for a divorced father who did not get to see his kid(s) as often as he wanted too.
Nina is now 12 years old. I have yet to tell her of Jay's passing. I am not sure how to approach it. I guess I will tell her what I am telling you all.
At the time of Jay's passing his grandson Chris and his sons Sandy and Jim surrounded him.
As a divorced father who doesn't get to see his kid as often as he would like too...I feel better knowing that Jay got to spend his last moments with his children.
Well...at least the children he knew about...

Very sad news. I never knew Mr. Marshall but I have always admired his magic performances and accomplishments.
Will there be a tribute issue of Genii for Jay? I'm surprised that there hasn't been a book about Jay written considerin his long and influential career.

Re: UPDATE: Jay Marshall has died
I've often wondered how I'd react when I got the call that Jay had passed away. When the call came early this morning, I wasn't ready for it. Now I have to tell my kids, Steven MARSHALL and my daughter, Jessica, affectionately known as "J." They are only 10 and 8. I'm not sure how to tell them.
Jay and I became friends in 1963 when he helped me with a show. In 1968, I interviewed him for a school paper. After the interview, I asked for his autograph. He gave me a copy of his book, "TV, Magic and You." Inside it said, "To Sandy, With love from his dad, Jay Marshall MERRY XMAS 1955." (Sandy, If you want the book, let me know. You are the only person in the world for whom I'd part with the book.) Around 1970, I shot slides of his poster collection for him. Two or three years later, I shot it again for the book, "100 Years of Magic Posters." Through the years I had the pleasure of helping out in the shop.
Jay, thank you for decades of help, ideas, joy, jokes, books, circuses and great memories. Give Fran a big hug for me. Take care of Lefty.

Re: UPDATE: Jay Marshall has died
For those who trully knew Jay Marshall must be some of the Luckiest in magic. I finally had the Chance to meet Jay this past year at MAGIC Live, and get him to sign a deck of cards for me and talk for a short while. In that time he made me feel as if I could have asked him anything. At that same event I was lucky enough to be in the first group to see the close up show, in which Jay was part of the audience. When there was a slight delay in the show Jay stood up and told jokes, a highlight for all those who were there. (Another joke memory was from this years WMS where Jay told dirty jokes including The Aristocrats) Jay will be missed dearly from the community and his memory will live on forever in magic. By the way the card that he signed- the Ace of Hearts, a good representation of who he was if you ask me.
