Tom Stone & Jonathan Pendragon Master Class
Tom Stone is coming to Los Angeles! This Swedish Genii columnist and bestselling author (Vortex, Maelstrom), known for his innovative thinking about magic, is in town for a very limited time, and has agreed to combine forces with world-famous, multiple award winning magician and bestselling author (Grand Illusion) Jonathan Pendragon, to teach a unique, 5-hour Master Class. The wider topic is Creativity and Innovation in Magic, but there will also be opportunities to discuss any aspect of magic technique or presentation desired by the students, as well as to workshop anything youre currently working on. Dont miss this opportunity to study with two of the greatest minds in magic today!
There will only be two chances to take this class, and participation will be strictly limited to 10 people per class. Dates and times: Saturday, March 24 or Saturday, March 31, from 11am to 4pm. Location: Jonathan Pendragons house, Toluca Lake, CA (specific address and directions will be provided to registered participants). Cost: $100.

Bet it's really worth a lot more than is being asked. This coming from the East Coast.

There is still room in the second class (Saturday, 31 March) for those who have been procrastinating. Email me at westmcdonough@gmail.com if you're interested.

Re: Tom Stone & Jonathan Pendragon Master Class
I can't believe that, the day before the Castle Awards show, this doesn't have a waiting list. Surely there are many more than 10 interested folks who will be in town the day before the big show. I emailed West as soon as I saw this, thinking that I would be lucky to get in. Magicians are amazing in negative as well as positive ways. I will be very disappointed if the second session is cancelled because of lack of interest.

Re: Tom Stone & Jonathan Pendragon Master Class
Never fear, Don. We have enough so that it will happen; it's just not full yet. At "worst" you'll just have a better student/teacher ratio than expected :)
Re: Tom Stone & Jonathan Pendragon Master Class
To some degree, the workshop will be tailored to the needs of the participants - but besides that, let me mention a few of the ingredients that we have planned.
Misdirection: Hands-on exercises with applications of both basic and advanced misdirection techiques.
Presentational layering: Hands-on exercises on how to use one or several subplots.
Personal originality: Discovering through practical examples how being obvious can give more unique results than when aiming for "creativity".
...just to mention a few of the parts in the workshop.

Tom,
I do not yet have Maelstrom. Will you have any for sale?

Re: Tom Stone & Jonathan Pendragon Master Class
Thinking of those things is usually not my strong suit. However, this time I actually remembered it, so Stephen Minch has sent a box to Jonathan, containing six Vortex and six Maelstrom. They will be 50 bucks each.
Also, I brought a small number of dice for the first routine in Maelstrom.

Tom got two standing ovations (out of two shows) in his opening night at the Parlor in the Magic Castle. Check out his show, and you'll understand why this weekend's Master Class is a must for magicians in Southern California. The contact information is listed at the beginning of this thread. Trust me, this is a workshop you will not want to miss!

Re: Tom Stone & Jonathan Pendragon Master Class
I had the wonderful experience of seeing Tom totally fry a very jaded Magic Castle crowd at his 9:30 performance in the Parlor last night. In speaking with Jonathan and West after the show I learned that there are a still a couple of slots open for Saturday's master class.
IMO the opportunity to learn from Tom and Jonathan in such an intimate setting is nothing short of an investment in one's ability to create strong magic. A proverbial word to the wise to anyone who is on the fence about attending this class: he who hesitates is lost.

I can confirm Donal's accountI was at the same show. Just fantastic. Benson Burner is worth the trip all by itself. Tom is an inspirationhe shows how creative it is possible to be.

Re: Tom Stone & Jonathan Pendragon Master Class
I just emailed West in hopes a seat or seats are open. I wouldn't imagine there would be. Wish I would have seen this yesterday.
I'll be driving down from San Jose (with a fellow magician) to see Tom's show Saturday night. I am looking forward very much to it.
His writings have made me take action in writing my own thoughts about magic down. I haven't done that for years.

There are still three open places for anyone interested.

This was an awesome experience! Thank you, West, for letting everyone know about this. And thank you Tom and Jonathan for an inspiring and thought provoking time that challenged me to think on our feet!

Craig, how about a breakdown of the day? I'm hoping there may be another opportunity down the road for me to attend.
Thanks, Joe

Re: Tom Stone & Jonathan Pendragon Master Class
Joe, If I could breakdown that day anything I typed would be an injustice to what ACTUALLY transpired.
Here are some thoughts and memories:
Tom is a sincere teacher and master of wonderworking.
Jonathan has an astronomical heart and belts out grand poetry.
West is a warm noblewoman that cooks a delicious meal.
English Shepherd Dogs LOVE a 'trapped' audience.
A master class like that could not happen again unless you had all of the above characters involved.

Re: Tom Stone & Jonathan Pendragon Master Class
Craig speak the truth - it would be difficult to give an accurate description of the day.
But if it is of any help, here is the schedule that Jonathan and I tried to follow:
11.00 Hello!
11.30 Subtext & effect
13.00 Food
13.30 Making props & prototypes
14.30 Misdirection
15.30 Any script for any trick
16.00 End
Due to a sudden rain we had to move inside, which stole some time so the last exercise had to be scrapped.

Re: Tom Stone & Jonathan Pendragon Master Class
Tom, you are correct,
And even though we didn't do the last exercise, Tom explained what it was about and so it can still be practiced at home.
Thank you for the time well spent!
