I'm curious, if you received any magic items for a holiday gift, what they were?

My girls bought me license plate with HOUD1N1 stamped on it. I already had the HOUDINI plate, but some how over the years, it wound-up on my wife's car.

My gift is Woody Aragon's "A Book in English". Glad to have it, after seeing him win the International Magic Convention contest in London last November.

Sorta-kinda: My daughter gave me The Invention of Hugo Cabret as well as The Hugo Movie Companion (also written by Brian Selznick). Ive already started reading this. Theres a one-page bio on Paul Kieve, the On Set Magician for the film. The chapter on automatons includes mention and a photo of Antonio Diavolo.

My son gave me a DVD of The Illusionist (the animated one) which I never saw in the theaters, so I look forward to watching it.

My lovely wife, got me the same book, "A Book in English" and the Persi Diaconis book. In addition I got an embroidered close-up mat that exactly fits my table.

Life is grand and I'm awash in mathemagical possibilities. The Diaconis book, which I've chosen to read first is simply marvelous.

Andrew: you're supposed to leave the book on the table while you page through it. If you HOLD it, then you're going to have to take that nap because it's so heavy.

I published the story on Magic Newswire, but considering the graciousness of Lady West... she gave me a set of smooth brass Sherwood Cups. I'm in love... with both of them.

I received several of the L&L "Worlds Greatest" DVD's. I have only had a chance to watch the "Wild Card" compilation thus far. After seeing the section with Tommy Wonder all of the other performances are pale by comparison. I already own the Tommy Wonder set and so have seen "The Tamed Card" many times before but never in contrast to other versions by other performers. Tommy was simply brilliant.

Yes, Tommy was brilliant. But he was also terribly stubborn, rolling his own cigarettes and killing himself every time he took a puff. If he didn't smoke, he'd still be alive.

For all you part-time/full-time smoking magicians out there, here are some links to ease the transition to a smoke-free act. Your lungs will thank you. I'm guilty of this pleasure from time to time and I have found these items to be discreetly helpful in kicking the habit, or at least curtailing the adverse effects that traditional usage causes on the lungs.

I got nothing magical, as my family never know what to get me. Also, it would shock them if they found out how much some things are! LOL. That said, my sister gave me a nice pair of Playing card cuff links. The links are super.. but she decided to pack them inside a heavy duty box, within a box, within.. a further 6 boxes, each one looking like a parcel, that nest together perfectly.:) Add a slide, and some elastic bands, and you have a very servicable set of nesting boxes.:)
( most of my other gifts can be drunk, or consumed )

I got the Lulu Hurst and Anna Eva Fay biographies from Hermetic Press.

It wasn't a surprise as I bought them for myself.

It's always a good idea to buy yourself a present as then you'll be getting something you really want.

This one was an out-of-the-blue surprise. After receiving it I IMMEDIATELY devoured it and posted a message on THE SECOND DEAL to the faithful. I repeat it here for those who might like this sort of thing:

This is a superb productcardstuff by Bebel, Tony Chang, Yoann, Alex, Astone, and Le Clezio: 17 routines, 13 sleights, and 2 bonus items. The deft delicacy of the visual artistry will seduce you to really start practicing. Many of the effects have a completely different look to them. The cards seem to float, flutter, explode, and defy gravity. Sometimes they seem to weigh no more than gossamer bubbles, which are maneuvered with utmost care and fluiditynothing is flourishy to the extreme, but just enough to make you blink twice, periodically hold your breath and then gently gasp.

The coolest aspect is that all of this great stuff comes stored on what looks like a credit card (with its own slip case) that converts into a zip drive. You just plug it in andviola!you get videos that are crisp and clear. All of the explanations are lucid and some are done only to music with occasional, printed words on the screenno speechifying

This product is, relatively speaking, priceybut its worth it.

By the way, I have no vested interest in this product and I usually dont endorse many products, but this one is exceptional.

This is a delivery system of a future.that is already here

I received Tim Ellis's new book "Timeless Magic", Tom Stone's "Maelstrom", David Acer's "More Power to You", both Troy Hooser books ("DesTROYers" and "Moments"), and Mike Powers' "Power Plays". Oh, and a new deck of blue backed Bicycles. That should keep me busy for a while.

My 10 year old son got a set of junior D'Lites. He then spent most of the afternoon pulling red lights out of various orifices (as only a 10 year old boy can).

None from the family, but I spent a potful of money on myself: Goodwin's ebook, the Hooser books, Woody Aragon's book, FASDIU, etc ....

and now I gotta wrestle with my conscience about this USB thingie!

Thanks to DrDanny, I will be picking up Bill Goodwin's e-book.

I just got Tom Stone's new book in the post yesterday. All I can say is wow. I'm really looking forward to diving into his commentary on the billiard balls.

Since I don't burden anyone with attempting to find me a magic "holiday" present, I allocate some dough each year to buy my own. And I am very good to myself: the magnificently beautiful and substantive Page by Page (Patrick Page's magnum opus), and a Lassen TTGF.

In the interest of full disclosure, I was awarded a nice performance bonus this year, so I also copped some complete collectors sets of the music of both Duke Ellington and Thelonious Monk. A cool yule, and a frantic first!

Hey fellow magi. My wife got me the first and second volume of Steve Beam's Trapdoor books! We met him in 2005 during a T.A.O.M. and enjoyed both his quick wit and wonderful magic. He also showed genuine compassion and said some comforting words when he learned that a family member of mine had recently passed away. He is a good man. So it was great to receive his books as Christmas gifts. They are filled with great magic and Steve's famous wit that had me laughing into the wee hours of the night. Just the book's Introduction will have you cracking up! I highly recommend them.
Give Aloha through magic,

Joe
