Most memorable Genii issues

Postby Philippe Noël » November 1st, 2005, 11:20 pm

What are your most memorable Genii issues and why?
I think my most memorable issue was Volume 64 number 1 (January 2001) and most memorable because of a fantastic article written by Jamy Ian Swiss called "A Millennium of Magic Literature".
I've read this article many times and still use it sometimes.
I also love Genii issues that are tribute to great magicians. One that I liked particularly was Michael Skinner's issue(November 2000).
I would love to read an issue about Jennings, Kaps, Diaconis, Lepaul...

I don't have it in front of me at the moment, but the Jamy Ian Swiss issue (The one at the end of his twelve issue "Shattering Illusions" run.)is one of my favourites.
As well, the Penn & Teller issue from the "Erika Larson" era, the cover was just hillarious.

Several issues come to mind immediately -

Bill Larsen Era Genii - Ted Biot issue from the early 80s because the cover is printed the same Oscar Meyer pink as the Wenii cover (See Harry Anderson's story in his book.)

Middlin' Genii - The Napoleons issue for Danny Orleans article on tradeshows and The Jay Marshall tribute issue in 1996.

Kaufman Era Genii - Either the Earl Nelson issue (fantastic in all directions) or the Dai Vernon issue. Actually, I just like Genii a whole lot more now that I used to - it's hard to pick a favorite lately.

Special recognition does go to the P&T cover mentioned above. Very funny - especially Johnny Thompson's angst and S&R sign in the background.

Eric,
Do you happen to know the volume and issue number of the Earl Nelson issue? I'm on my way to the back issue page to take a look around but thought you might remember off hand.
Thanks

Loved the John Carney issue of a couple years back. I thought the photography was very stylish and original for one.

By the way, as I have closed in on my 100th post to this forum, do I win anything????

The Earl Nelson issue is August 2001. If there aren't any back issues, blame me - I bought an extra because it was so good.

e

ps - Randy, whatever you get, let me know - I'm closing in on 200, so I should get two of 'em.

The Michael Skinner issue is probably my favorite in recent memory. I even put aside my cards and learned some great magic without cards.

The card magic was excellent too :)

I'm not supposed to tell, but look for a prize when you get to 500.

I'm still looking for mine . . . .

I've just travelled back from the future and can reveal to everyone that the GENII issue featuring Richard Kaufman's detailed article on the life, times, and work of Theodore DeLand is excellent.

Hello everybody
I agree with Philippe the most memorable issue was Volume 64 number 1 January 2001. Dai Vernon issue was also really great.
But now then I still hold the Hofzinser issue November 2005 I think is the best one!!
Thanks Mr Kaufman and thanks Magic Christian!
Cheers

Hey JohnI passed you when you were coming back

and waved but you were reading a magazine . Who

was that driving, looked like a kangaroo that was

driving. I was going to the future to see the

Mysto Magic Set Issue .

All joking aside the most memorable isue I ever

saw was the first one. Bill Larsen had put an ad

In Mechanics Illustrated in the want ads " Trial

three months subscripton " to Genni/The Conjurers

Magazine " $1.00 . I about tore the pocket off my

pants getting my dollar out. It was in 1954. I was

14 .Every day when I came home from school the

first thing I would was look in the mailbox. Then

go in and ask my Mother did she get the mail, had

it come . When it finally did arrive I'm sure it

was the most memorable magic magazine I had ever

seen!............Mike Walsh
