Margret must have sent you one by hand for some reason. However you will have received an email from me that solves your problem.

Just starting to check this out and looked up one of my favorite satires from years ago: "Cutting a Pack of Cards" by Robert Byrne (Genii Vol 36, page 232 and 233) and later reprinted with additions (Genii Vol 50, page 732 and 733). Enjoy

Gordini,
Thanks for the info! Let's see if we can provides links directly to pages in iGenii: "Cutting a Pack of Cards" by Robert Byrne (Genii Vol 36, page 232) (warning: links may break over time as volumes are rescanned and/or split into issues. We are working on creating permalinks which would not.)
Richard,
Where would be the best place for users to post these iGenii/AskAlexander "finds"? Under Genii>Magicana
or maybe create a new forum called "iGenii" under Genii ?

I don't know whom to direct this to, so I just write it here:
Would it be possible to, at some point in the future, make a check box search option to exclude Table of Contents and volume indexes from the search?
That is, so that the search for specific terms in the actual content becomes easier.

Tom, probably better to post User Interface suggestions on the AskAlexander Forum (there is a link at the top when you log in).

I can understand why Tom would make that suggestion, however I wouldn't do it for this reason: I can't tell you how many times I have clicked on what turned out to be a table of contents page and ended up reading not only what I was looking for, but other things listed in the contents that hadn't crossed my mind earlier!

What operating system and browser are you using Jeff?
You at least need a PDF reader (like Adobe Reader).

Re: iGenii is NOW Available Online for All Genii Subscribers
Jeff,
That's my set up too and I also had that problem. Uninstalling reader, rebooting, reinstalling a clean copy and then another reboot seemed to fix the issue for me.
I had set my pdf reader to open them in a separate "reader" window (not browser) and I think that also lead to some problems.

I don't know if this works with iGenii per se, but ANYONE out there still using the horrendously bloated adobe acrobat reader will THANK ME FOREVER after they use this FREE alternative
http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/reader/
I don't have to use it anymore as I am a 100% mac whore, but when I was forced to use a PC I used Foxit everyday.

One thing I found with Foxit was that it wouldn't play the embedded videos in my Work books. I spoke with their support team who said they couldn't handle the embedded flash video at the time.

Foxit is fast, but has given me rendering issues with complex pdf's in the past. As Ian mentions, it's not truly a 100% implementation of Adobe's standard.

Re: iGenii is NOW Available Online for All Genii Subscribers
Since Acrobat 9, all embedded video is converted to FLV during import, which means there's no need to install any codecs on the player system. This is a good thing, but the player is embedded in Reader 9 and it seems that many of the non standard readers (including Apple Preview) cannot play the videos.
Foxit's solution was 'can you compile your books using Foxit Pro?' to which my reply was 'No'. Acrobat was expensive enough...

Also having having problems viewing the pages - can logon fine to Ask Alexander, but when I open the issues, there is nothing to view.
Operating System is Ubuntu Linex, using Firefox browser, and have Adobe reader 9.
Anyone else had similar issues or any ideas?
Thanks
Colin

Re: iGenii is NOW Available Online for All Genii Subscribers
Am happy to note iGenii works great on an iPad (using the Safari browser). Bill was one of the first I saw with an iPad. Perhaps he'll one day design a special iPad app. Meanwhile, it looks great.
Re: iGenii is NOW Available Online for All Genii Subscribers
Colin,
Tom Stone has a link above for Mac users with this problem
I know, you don't have a Mac but . . .
I have Ubuntu on my PC. Fired it up to access Ask Alexander and . . . no go. I'd check out this thread. I don't know what your rig looks like.
http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/C ... 6c42&hl=en
The "Popular" answer got my Ubuntu machine asking Alexander just fine.
KG
PS - not all browsers do pdfs within frames equally well. I'd try another browser if you can't get Firefox to play nicely.

Thanks Kent - with some help from that link and, my son (who has a better IT understanding than me), I am now able to view the pages.
Thank you Richard for this excellent service.

Re: iGenii is NOW Available Online for All Genii Subscribers
The pdfs do not show up on Chrome on my Mac. But Safari works great.
iGenii is the coolest thing in a while, by the way.
I noticed that if you click in the thin grey horizontal bar at the top of the pdf display window, you can expand the window upwards, overlapping the two Ask Alexander bars at the top of the window. Much less scrolling.
I checked out issue 1. The LW Stop Trick is very cool.

Re: iGenii is NOW Available Online for All Genii Subscribers
This is a great concept, but after a week of effort I still can not get activated ;-(
First my e-mail was not properly entered in the data base. After being told that was fixed, I am still unable to activate and I have not revived any reply to my pleas for help (via e-mail)on Friday and Monday.
So I am left with nothing but jealousy for those of you who can access this and despair for the shallowness of my life with out access to the Genii archives :-(

I think I see the problem Bob. I sent you a PM. Use your old Email Address. The Genii record was updated, but not the activation script.

Hi Joe,
In some cultures I would have to be your indentured servant for seven years, or until I saved your life. But since this is not one of those cultures I'll just say, "Thank you very much!!!"
I'm in and this looks GREAT on my iPad.
Thank you again!

Re: iGenii is NOW Available Online for All Genii Subscribers
Glad to help!
I'll try to get the fix in tonight so that it doesn't happen to anyone else (it's only an issue if you already sent an email to Genii offices and then sent in a different one later. The activation still used the old one.)

Doing random exploration - fantastic resource!
It seems that some pages are missing (not scanned)? Looking for cover of Genii Vol 31, No. 3 November 1966 (could not find physical pages 104 and 105.) The Table of Contents is there - physical page 107, but the navigation numbering lists this as page 105.

Alexander got fiddled with and looks like its using a newer/odder version of adobe reader plugin... safari on mac seems to work.. firefox on mac seems a bit patchy... unfortunately even though I'm a subscriber through Alakazam (And magic box before that) seems I'm not sure if we get access.. as there is no code etc on our issues of genii...
I've supported CARC for many years, and I'd like to add Genii into what I have access to.. but...

Re: iGenii is NOW Available Online for All Genii Subscribers
naquada, I'm sorry that we are unable to provide access to folks who purchase the magazine through magic stores. We make no money on the copies sold through shops.
So it's for subscribers only. There's a reason for this that will become obvious in a month or two!

Re: iGenii is NOW Available Online for All Genii Subscribers
Gordolini and all,
Please notify the Alexander librarians when you find issues (that is the only way they will probably know to fix it).
There are two ways to do this:
1) Click the button on the side in the "Report a problem" panel when viewing a page of a document
2) Post it to the "Problems" section of the Alexander Forums.

Re: iGenii is NOW Available Online for All Genii Subscribers
Is the page being displayed within the browser or is it popping in adobe reader application?
Adobe Reader needs to be configured to *not* to open PDFs in the browser.
* Open up Adobe Reader by itself, go to "Edit" -> "Preferences"
* And under the "Internet" section, check the "Display PDF in browser" box.

Do you have a side panel next to the page with information about the document (Name, Author, Date, etc)?
There should be arrows in that side panel for browsing to the next page.

You should have bookmarked it. :)
If you go to the Activation Page, there is a link right on there to the login page. It only shows up when you reenter your email address and Activation Key.
