JC Wagner Update

Postby Terry » August 9th, 2010, 10:15 pm

Steve Friedberg posted this on another board:

Folks:
As many of you know, JC was diagnosed earlier this year with Stage 4 colon cancer. He has continued to perform the magic he loves so much, and has spent a lot of time with other magicians.

Sadly, the cancer has progressed, as we all knew it would. On his website, it says, "DUE TO A SETBACK IN HIS HEALTH, JC WILL NOT BE APPEARING AT THE LITTLE CLUB FOR THE NEXT TWO WEEKS." A good friend of his has authorized me to post the following, with permission from JC: JC is weak and will begin hospice.

I had the chance last year to session with JC, and to thank him personally for his work over the years. Many of you have done the same, I'm told...and I know he truly appreciates each note he's received. I've sent him a note tonight to thank him for everything he did for me, both in person and through his writings. If you'd like to send him an email as well, his address is jc@jcwagnersmagic.com.

JC has been, and remains, one of the good guys in magic. I hope you'll take a minute and jot off a note to him.

JC is certainly one of the good guys and I look forward to hearing that he's improved. I had a chat with him in March and he was very upbeat and optimistic about the future. He deserves for something good to happen!

Sad news to hear about Mr. Wagner. His book The Commercial Magic of J.C. Wagner has always been a favorite of mine .

From Boc Sheets Facebook...

JC Wagner just passed away. 7:11 Pacific. Private burial at sea. Memorial to be planned by Magi. He was at peace until the very end and amidst family. Good bye old friend. You will be missed.

A sad day indeed, another great lost.

If you missed it the first time, it is certainly worth a listen. Here is my chat with JC from March of this year: http://bit.ly/JCWagner

From his website listing his current location:

" Puttin a Card under St Peter's glass & even HE didn't catch it!"

Great epitaph!

I was very taken aback when I made my post earlier and wanted to come back to this now to say something perhaps more meaningful. Like many in magic I knew of JC and he knew not of me. I met him just once at a convention years ago and while I remember now so little of that event the one thing that stayed in my mind was JC. Throughout the weekend he nailed me so many times with his skill yet the thing I remember most was simply how he spoke to me. Like an old friend, he was approachable, kind and easy going. I feel both jealousy and pity for those who knew him far greater than I did for their loss is unfathomable.

Quoting from a recent article in Roger Ebert's blog...
We all began that journey at the moment of our birth. We will all surely complete it. What lies beyond is no more knowable than what lay before. As a mourner in a pet cemetery in "Gates of Heaven" so truly observes, "Death is for the living and not for the dead so much."

When JC was there, everybody knew. Everybody wanted to know when JC was there.

He was a great guy and a great magician. It's a great loss.

Everyone, please raise a glass to JC tonight - then reveal the selected card that was under it.

Thanks JC.

I had the pleasure of spending some time with JC in 2009 at the Golden Gate Gathering. It is time that I will always treasure. He was a true gentleman and a remarkable magician. I will miss him.

I had J.C.'s books and VHS tapes but didn't meet him until after his reemergence in magic, and I, like a lot of people, was unprepared for the quietly dashing, charismatic figure he presented. On top of that he was so modest, welcoming and supportive...I really was as astonished by that as much as his wonderful magic. At the Magic Castle award show a few months back he was looking well and was determined to beat his illness. Now he's gone, and our loss is another reminder to appreciate everything - and everyone - that we have.

Very sad news.
Condolences to his family and friends.
JC Wagner gave a last-minute, after-hours lecture at the IBM convention in San Diego. He shared that the treatments were working.
That Sunday he was at a bonus lecture on coin magic given by Mr. Tango (Marcelo) of Tango Magic. JC was still learning magic, and living in the moment.
