Official FISM 2012 Website Now Up

Postby Richard Kaufman » March 14th, 2010, 8:42 pm

The official FISM 2012 website is now up here:

http://www.fismwcm2012.com/

It begins with an incredibly portentious film presented in a Flash window that cannot be shut off, and it starts from the beginning with no respite every time you return to the home page. A "skip intro" and volume/mute button would be greatly appreciated

The venues make it appear that it will be very much like a normal Blackpool convention, with the big shows and contests in the Opera House, and the dealers in the same places they always are. Close-Up will fortunately be in some other theater rather than the Horseshoe.

90 pounds for a normal Blackpool convention, 500 Euros for FISM. Why does that not sound like a good deal. By the way, the "cafeteria" in the Winter Garden is touted as being one of its appealing attributes. That gave me a chuckle.

Apparently attendance will be determined by the appearance of the ceilings of the theaters and ballroom.

I presume the "wcm" is for "World Championships of Magic," which the conference is all about, yes? It sort of makes sense to me.

But the ceilings still haven't convinced me to go.

The ceilings haven't convinced you? Just wait until you read the online reviews of the official convention hotel, the Hilton Blackpool.

I do like the fact the management address all the negative comments. That's good PR

Lol.

I am genuinely embarrassed for the hundreds/thousands of visitors to England for the first time who think that Blackpool is a fair representation of England as a whole.

Honestly, some of the UK has evolved beyond 1979.

It's not written very well. IMO, it comes across as condescending and patronising. "I could find no record of a complaint about the noise...We expect all guests to be courteous to each other". etc.

Attacking bad publicity head on *is* A Good Thing, but I think they need a new copy writer.

In all seriousness, when I originally heard the rumor that FISM was going to be in London, my wife and I started to make plans for our first trip to Europe together. When Blackpool was announced as the location, we decided to save our money.

Also, don't know why I didn't realise this before, it's TRIP ADVISOR!

The same site that places the Magic Castle hotel in LA's top ten hotels.

(ie tripadvisor is a piece of piss to game)

Well which site was Richard referring to?

There are many online reviews of the Hilton Blackpool. I wasn't referring to one particular website.

I hear that the Magic Castle Hotel is a bit better than it used to be (I stayed there onceyou can read about it somewhere on this site). A bit better tells me its been upgraded from S**t-Hole to Dump.

I have stayed there twice. Once was a stupid cheap deal and all I was in town for was to go to the Castle, so I went every night and it was the easiest.

The rooms are a good size, but are from 1968 I estimate. What does make the place is the staff. Everyone I encountered there was exceptionally outstandingly polite, helpful obliging.

The plastic, slightly cracking bath spoilt that though.

Here's the story of my ordeal there (it's the closing part of a longer story of a night at the Castle in 2004):

God, it's going to be a long and dreary 28 months if we we have one of these threads every time FISM 2012 is mentioned

Hey, Tim, the *brilliant* thing about the internet is that often the subject of the post gives you a clue as to what is contained within. If you don't want to read about FISM 2012, simple do not open that post!

Brilliant eh?

This thread was not started at random or by chance: it originated because the official website went live and carried various bits of information that were new, like the fact that the Blackpool Hilton is going to be the official hotel. In Beijing, I had heard that the delegates were told that a new hotel was being built in Blackpool, and that was going to be the official hotel.
