MAGIC-CON 2010 Special Guest of Honor

Postby Dave Buck » November 18th, 2009, 12:50 pm

It has been a dream come true for us in assembling the line-up for Magic-Con 2010. We started out with a wish list of our favorite magicians and to now see those names on the Magic-Con website as actual presenters of the conference is unbelievable.

There is one name we have not announced, and to say we are saving the best for last, would be an understatement. All we can say is, if you have not registered before we reveal our Special Guest of Honor, you might miss out on a once in a lifetime opportunity.

On December 1st, we will unveil his identity.

See what Eric Mead and John Lovick have to say about the Special Guest in a new series of video testimonials.

Also, be sure to check out our latest podcast featuring two very respected magicians, Michael Weber and Derek Delgaudio, discuss the next generation of magic, the YouTube effect and what you can expect at Magic-Con.

We will be adding new testimonials daily to our Vimeo account here: http://www.vimeo.com/magiccon with subtle clues to who the Special Guest is. Will you be able to figure it out before we announce him on December 1st?

Post your guesses below.

Well I was going to say Paul Harris, when I heard Eric Mead had the first post because of the books and all. Then while I was listening to Mr. Mead I briefly thought Doc...

But no. There can be only one.

Juan Tamariz

In listening to Paul Wilson though--he says the Special Guest learned from the greats--i.e. "Juan Tamariz"--

Sure wish it was Juan--he is fantastic in person!!

My guess is:

Paul Harris

Paul Harris does seem a likely candidate.

It would be easy to suss out.

Dan and Dave: will your special guest actually perform tricks for the conventioneers? If the answer is no, then it might very well be Paul Harris. If the answer is yes, then it's far less likely to be Paul Harris.

Well they mention performing and lecturing which unless things have changed would rule out Paul Harris. Paul Wilson said the guest studied under Tamariz... so out goes Juan. Paul also mentioned cards.. But I'm at a loss for a name. Ok John mentined funny.. Williamson? Not sure of a Tamariz connection.

Technically, he said that the guest uses ideas of Tamariz. Of course, Juan would use his own ideas.

Derren Brown?

Seems the convention dates (not so?) coincidentally fit a gap in Derren Brown's touring schedule.

(I was thinking about it being Lennart Green, but it seems to me that he does not fit all of the clues.)

If not Derren Brown, I wonder if another performer with initials DB might be the one.

Someone who is always doing those things that only a true Spaniard can do, like speaking Spanish and going home to visit his family in Spain.

Dave Buck's video says that the special presenter has transcended the world of magic and achieved genuine celebrity and is the acclaimed author of several best selling books sold world wide.

I like Derren Brown for this as I said before. Incidentally, he has a new book slated for release on December 1, 2009 (according to Amazon).

The other "DB" candidate I was thinking of was David Blaine, in case that was not obvious, but as far as I know he only has the one best selling book, not several.

Ok, Derek's video aside, I think all signs point to Tamariz. Paul Wilson practically "spells it out" for us, and Max's video has a nice little background reference to a Spanish artist.

Of course, I could be wrong:)

Mike beat me to the guess. I've edited enough film and video, heard enough bleeps and blips to formulate what Derek is saying and he's saying Ricky Jay. Whether or not that's the ACTUAL special guest is going to be seen Dec 1 but at multiple points you can hear Derek saying Ricky Jay's name.

The event would be monumental if it was Ricky Jay. Actually it's going to be monumental whomever it is. But Ricky Jay would make it a first trip to Disneyland kinda thing.

Legal disclaimer: Craig Ousterling (to be referenced as the company) makes no claim what was written above to be true in any way shape or form. The company has no previous knowledge about anything actual or factual about Ricky Jay (to be reffered to as the 'MAN') or the Magic Con 2010 (To be referred to as the event) If the MAN were to show up at the EVENT the COMPANY shall take all credit where credit is due accept credit noted by Mr. Rozek (to be referred to as the original guesser of the amount of jelly beans in the jar at the lobby of the hotel where the EVENT shall take place when the MAN shows up)

It's not going to be David Berglas, and Derren Brown is not a student of Juan Tamariz last I heard (though he fits most of the other qualifications).

Oh, that still leaves David Blaine, and I haven't heard that he's been hanging with Tamariz, either. But who knows?

Juan Tamariz is a Spanish close-up magician, though that title belittles him. He is one of the great living masters of performing magic with cards--an astounding showman and performer whose abilities are almost unmatched. He had (has?) a show on Spanish TV for many years, and it was shown in Spanish-speaking countries all over the world.
Search under his name on YouTube and enjoy.

Juan Tamariz is very good. He shouts and screams too much for me though. We British prefer our entertainment to be somewhat lower key. Not quite as low key as Fred Robinson and Jack Avis but a trifle lower key than Juan Tamariz.
