Was there an 'adults only' section in the dealers room at the past FISMs that I missed  They're spoiling all our fun

Craig, if you'd ever been to a dealer room at a convention in Asia you would know that there are effects sold which show pictures of genitalia and nude bodies. The Asians don't have the same attitude toward this sort of thing that westerners do.

So maybe FISM needs to define "pornographic"?

The definition of pornographic: you know it when you see it.

You learn something new every day ...

But now they've sanitised it - what happened to our traditional 'asian cultural' experience :)

Allow it in the dealers room? I didn't think they even allowed that stuff in the country.

From this discussion I am anticipating a bit of culture shock... If you are easily offended, avert your eyes from the Sararīman reading Hentai on the trains . (Though this may apply more in Japan than in China)

Gee, y'think? Given that "sarariman" and "hentai" are both Japanese words, the logic here is the equivalent of expecting to visit the United States and see gauchos doing bolo dancing.

And, for what it's worth, in the course of countless train rides in Japan over the past 28 years, I have never seen anyone who has publicly displayed his/her reading material, "hentai" or otherwise.

You're right Max, it probably was a long way to go to illustrate Richard's point about the sensibilities of Asian cultures vs that of the US, but...

I've visited the U.S. twice, and never expected to see anything like that, because I know that your bolo dancing only is done in private.

Does that apply as much in mainland China, though? I'd read that the China was more conservative about these things compared to, say, Japan.

The effects you've seen which show pictures of genitalia and nude bodies, are these largely the same sort of effects you would find in North America but with different packaging?

They're tricks with paddles and cards, plaques, and so on. Anything which lends itself to having a picture or photo printed on it.

The warning was mostly likely made by FISM because I assume most of the dealers will be from other parts of Asia and assume that what is allowed elsewhere will be allowed in Beijing.

In answer to your question, though, I have indeed seen this sort of thing in the dealers room at the conventions I've been to in Shenzhen.

To be honest I do not think unscrupulous dealers who are banned from the room will care. Having experience with Asian conventions I have noticed that there are many "unsanctioned" dealers who set their products up in their room. All they need to do is spread the word and voila, now the potential buyers come to them! That will be almost impossible to stop and believe me it will happen.
