Criss is back at it ...

Postby CraigMitchell » April 19th, 2009, 3:16 pm

Norm Clarke reports:

The Twitterati world is aflutter over Criss Angel's profane parting shot at celebrity gossip blogger Perez Hilton.
As Angel was ending his magic show Friday at the Luxor, the "Mindfreak" illusionist gave a shout-out.

"I have to recognize someone special here in the house," said Angel, according to a showgoer. "Perez Hilton, please stand up.
"We have the world's biggest d***hebag [censored] in the house!" Angel said. Perez Hilton smiled broadly and said, "Thanks for the free tickets." There's buzz that Angel berated the blogger after his camp saw Perez Hilton's Twitter site, which carried real-time comments lambasting the show, including "unbelievably BAD!" and "I would rather be getting a root canal."

Perez Hilton, whose real name is Mario Lavandeira, has one of the most popular celebrity sites (PerezHilton.com) on the Internet and more than 600,000 "followers" on his Twitter site, a social networking service. Neither Cirque du Soleil, Angel's corporate and creative partner in "Believe," nor Angel's camp responded to e-mails by deadline. Perez Hilton, reached by e-mail, said he was "flattered by the very special shout-out."
He said he wanted to see the show, because "until 'Believe,' Cirque has had an incredible track record of excellence. I have seen all of their Vegas shows and loved them all."

Hi Kevin,

Are you messing with us or are you serious? It is of course Perez and not Paris Hilton.

Since you're so up to speed, you probably meant "He refers to himself as the Queen of Media." since he is, indeed, male.

Ooooooh, quite the snappy comeback, Speedy. You really put me in my place.

By "expertise", are you implying that I'm more knowledgeable than you in being able to identify the physical difference between a male and a female? For someone so up to speed, I find this to be a surprising hole in your cognizance. :o

As you may have noticed, neither of them seem to merit a link on that list of celebrities on thehollywoodgossip.

But when you click on even a lesser star - say Brittney who's on tour there's plenty to watch.

That clip for "outrageous" looks (and maybe even sounds) kinda like Janet Jackson's "what have you done for me lately" IMHO. Anyone done a mashup of the two? Jimmy Jam?

Guess some trix aren't even playing for kids.

As Michael reported above ... Norm is not mincing his words:

"Criss Angel has got to go.

That's the decision, I am convinced, that Cirque du Soleil and MGM Mirage partner will reach this week after the illusionist's latest brand-damaging stunt.

His foul-mouthed shout-out at celebrity gossip blogger Perez Hilton on Friday in front of a G-rated audience shouldn't be tolerated.

Threatening a journalist, as he did a year ago, in a relatively isolated area is one thing. A mega-million dollar show was in the works, so Cirque decided to ride out the storm.

But this time he crossed the line: He insulted a lot of people, including those who work in his Luxor theater. It couldn't have come at a worse time. Las Vegas doesn't need that kind of publicity during one of the country's worst economic downturns. With all the other concerns heaped on their plate, Cirque and especially MGM Mirage don't need it either.

He's a goner, sooner than later."

For those who can't click and go (look at how many emailers have yet to learn to cut and paste<G>):
CIRQUE OFFERS APOLOGY FOR ANGEL'S 'INAPPROPRIATE' AND 'DISRESPECTFUL' REMARKS'

Cirque du Soleil issued a statement on Monday regarding Criss Angel's obscenity-laced shoutout to celebrity gossip blogger Perez Hilton.

"Cirque du Soleil does not condone disrespectful behavior towards any audience member at any time. Cirque management will address such behavior privately with any of its artists to ensure it will not happen again.

"Along with our partner, MGMMIRAGE, Cirque du Soleil wishes to extend an apology to any audience member that may have been offended by Criss Angel's inappropriate and disrespectful remarks at Friday night's performance of Believe."

Oh, and before someone says that all the magicians in Vegas are just jealous of his "success".....We wanted him to succeed because it would be good for magic on the Strip. With the corp. mentality of the casinos now, one bad magic act means all of the new ones are going to be bad or too much of a risk. Not fair but that's the way the world is...............

Here's a funny but sad take on the whole episode out of the LA Times. There are some great quotes about Criss and on Norm Clarke elevating Criss to "an embarrassment to the city." I also liked, "Being articulate and quick-witted are not exactly Angel's strengths."

As one of the characters in an early Star Trek episode said: "Good behavior is rewarded...bad behavior is punished," a lesson Criss has yet to learn, which is sad for a 40-something.

The Movable Buffet: Dispatches from Las Vegas by Richard Abowitz

I spent one day in bed sick and the rest of my weekend at the opening of the Hard Rock's new Joint checking out the Killers and Paul McCartney. I messed up. I should have followed blogger Perez Hilton during his Vegas weekend. His visit is going to be talked about for some time to come.

First off, Hilton attended Criss Angel's "Believe" at the Luxor on Friday night. Like many, he had enjoyed all of Cirque's other shows in Vegas and therefore ignored the reviews and was willing to risk "Believe." It took 15 minutes into "Believe" for me to realize that the show was really not going to get any better but instead, with an earnest energy, kept piling up melodramatic and pretentious moments to some summit of numbing dullness and pointlessness. After months of work on improving the show through Cirque's fixation process, it took Hilton about five minutes longer to reach the identical conclusion. So, perhaps "Believe" has manged to prolong by five minutes audience members' realization moment that they are at an insufferable show?

Anyway, Hilton sent a Tweet to his over half-million followers when he reached that moment: "We are 20 minutes in and Criss Angel's Vegas show, Believe, is unbelievably BAD!" Reading Hilton's other Tweets made clear that the performance was a typical one for the troubled show as when a technical glitch brought the show to a halt for a few minutes (when I saw "Believe," among other problems, Angel was cut in half by a descending blade that had yet to reach him). Hilton's other Tweets on "Believe" included: "I would rather be getting a root canal."

Angel ended the performance by giving a call out to Hilton. At that point, according to Norm Clarke's Review-Journal column on Saturday, Angel hurled obscene insults at Hilton. Hilton's smiling response: "Thanks for the free tickets." Round 1 goes to Hilton, and Angel should not only apologize but thank Hilton for what was probably a rare moment of actual entertainment for an audience at "Believe."

To Angel's credit: For all his bad judgment, he is not a coward. For him to get into a war of words with Hilton is to enter a fight he is certain to lose. Being articulate and quick-witted are not exactly Angel's strengths. But they are Hilton's gifts in abundance. Already the most ridiculed headliner on the Strip, leading the most reviled show in Vegas, Angel wears a gigantic target with "Believe," which is totally worthy of nasty satire. With Hilton he has challenged an expert marksman and dared him to shoot at an easy target. Only pity can save Angel's show at this point. And, I am not sure if pity is one of Perez Hilton's gifts.

One startling example came in today's Review-Journal with Clarke's column. Clarke is a news guy whose columns frequently feature personal anecdotes but usually leave commentary and reviews to the critics on staff. The rare times Clarke breaks that tradition are usually to talk about something he enjoyed. In fact, for all the writing Clarke has done about Angel, I don't think he has ever published his opinion on "Believe."

But today his column opens "Criss Angel has got to go." Clarke's argument is more rooted in the star becoming an embarrassment to the city than a critique of the show. To many of you reading this, Angel's behavior may not seem as bad as, say, his behavior this time last year when he allegedly threatened to poke Clarke's eye out. But even then Clarke did not call for Angel's expulsion from Vegas. There is a reason for that change. The story resonates and is much more upsetting to locals. Everyone in Vegas gets that we are a tourist economy dependent on our guests. Angel is not the first Vegas worker to be upset by a guest's opinions or behavior. Every casino employee at some point has had to smile at the words or actions of a hideous guest. Las Vegas strives to be overwhelmingly grateful for our tourists and there is a Strip obsession that nothing in the stories tourists take home contain complaints about the staff. Unless you are Don Rickles, any employee in any casino in Las Vegas would likely lose a job for insulting an invited guest as Angel did to Hilton. That behavior is anathema to the entertainment and business model that makes Las Vegas Las Vegas.

Regarding the Criss Angel/Perez Hilton situation, Criss was wrong for stating his personal opinion during a show and yes, Perez Hilton had a great comeback with "thanks for the free tix".

However, later Perez was judging the Miss USA contest (why??!! Not only is he just a gossip columnist, but he has expressed his disdain at such contests.. oh well, Cirque chose a director for BelIEve who didn't like magic so it's par for the course).

Anyway, Perez decided to ask a finalist what she thought of same-sex marriage "Do you think every state should follow suit? Why or why not?"

The contestant gave her answer which finished with: "You know what, in my country, and in my family, I think that I believe that a marriage should be between a man and a woman - no offense to anybody out there," she said. "But that's how I was raised. And that's how I think that it should be between a man and a woman. Thank you."

Some people argue that the contestant was wrong for not answering in an all-inclusive, non-commital, politically correct way, others argue she did the right thing by saying what she believed in... after all, Perez Hilton asked for HER opinion and he got it.

Unfortunately he wasn't happy that she didn't share his opinion so he went to town on his blog (which he doesn't even bother to write, he just sits in front of his webcam and talks) calling her a dumb b**** for not agreeing with him.

http://perezhilton.com/tv/index.php?ptvid=0bad59ed42807

Many other commentators feel that Perez did the wrong thing by bringing up the hot topic in such an inappropriate forum as a beauty pagent. They feel he was using the show as a platform to push his own agenda.

It would be like, going to a magic show and the magician taking a shot at a nasty blogger. Not what you paid to see.

Her answer almost certainly cost her the title since Perez probably scored her lower because he didn't like her answer. She was asked a question and whether one agrees with her opinion or not, she answered honestly and should not have been penalized for doing so.

Later, Perez came across as petty and vindictive.

It's a pretty safe bet that the people of the Miss U.S.A. Pageant both knew and approved of his question, and the question is of a topical nature and I thought quite appropriate for the forum.
That said, yes, Perez has gone too far with his reactions. The girl expressed her opinion, which she is allowed to have and was asked for.
And while we are at it, Perez does write his blog, as well as post videos.

I'd only seen the .tv bit...

He's certainly milking his shot in the spotlight!

Is it true he changed his name from Mario to Perez just to sound like "Paris" and thus get more attention...? Like someone who brings out a brand of cola called Pipsi?
