Free e-book of Expert at the Card Table for You

Postby Richard Kaufman » July 30th, 2008, 2:21 pm

This information is published in the August issue of Genii, but there's no reason why the rest of you can't take advantage of it.
We have posted an e-book of The Expert at the Card Table here for you to download. It's a searchable pdf.
Go to: http://geniimagazine.com/erdnase/
You'll have to answer a question. If you can't figure out the answer, you don't deserve the e-book. NOTE that the name which is requested is case sensative, so capitalize the first letter.

I felt like a moron for about five minutes.
The question might better be put as what's the LAST name of Vernon's.....................

I thought I was losing it.......or had it wrong all this time :)

The first name is unknown. The last name is backward ... we think.

Richard, there ARE two initials that are considered part of the mans name, they're on the front of the first edition, and every one after that :)

I was starting off with the initials. Needless to say I wasn't having any luck.

No friends, no relatives, no trustees for his legacy, no interest from the magic community at the time... not even a ghost.

And yes - let's presume the E. S. which makes the reverese of "Andrews" workable was put there for a reason, as was the S. and W. :)

In a way, this is somewhat amusing. Richard and his staff have set up a great tool for card magicians as a free download, and people are quibbling over which version of the name to use as a password.

That's kind of like someone offering free hammers, and people griping about the color of the handles.

Thanks, Richard!

It's nothing more than a passing observation Bill, a bit of casual conversation here on the forum.

I thought it was funny that I entered the wrong name a few times........is this really worthy of a negative comment?

Is that the e-book titled "The Great American Magic Book Publisher Lovers" and was blank? :)

It's not about the magic; it's about the daily box office gross.

I actually didn't get the answer correct the first couple of times because I wasn't quite sure if the answer I was thinking of would be considered a "magic book". Certainly there's a section of the book that pertains to legerdemain but I don't think "magic book" is the best descriptor for that particular book.

Nonetheless, I got a copy and appreciate the gift very much!

Thanks, Richard!

Tony

I hope to do more things like this in the future. I have a few manuscripts that I'm never going to get around to publishing--the market just won't support them. Instead, I may just post them as free e-books. Of course, the problem still exists that someone has to lay the book out for no pay, but I'll be able to surmount that obstacle at some point.

What about having the ebook sponsored by an advertiser to cover the cost of the layout? I reckon it's a great proposition to have - say - BROUGHT TO YOU BY SPUMCO MAGIC INC on the cover, and/or maybe a URL at the foot of every page or something. Not intrsive, nothing that would alienate the readers. But a free ebook will end up in the hands of LOTS of magicians and would be an excellent advertising/sponsorship joint venture I'd have thought. If I ran a magic site I'd jump at it. Just a thought.

Richard,

One idea would be to give these away for free, to those that:

1) Purchased one of you books
2) Renewed their subscription to Genii
3) ...

That way you are rewarding your loyal customers and still getting some benefit yourself.

It's very difficult to lock things up and have to give out codes and all of that stuff so only certain people can access it. Then it gets sent all around the internet anyway.

I hope to put up a new ebook (that is, a previously unpublished book) soon. We'll probably do a micro-charge for it, like a $1 or $2, just to cover some expenses.

How did I miss the downloadable book of Sam Loyd puzzles? Did that get posted? Do I have to know Sam Loyd's first name?

I can look up the issue at the Castle library tonight. If I find it, is it okay for me to post the link here, for the benefit of Don and others like me?
