By Max Maven, or Eugene Burger?

Re: Best Quote
The quote is Eugene's.
My corollary is: "But not all of them are decorated to the same level of taste."

SEEING IS BELIEVING?
Not a magician. From the Oxford Dictionary of Proverbs:
SEEING is believing
1609 S. Harward MS (Trinity College, Cambridge) 85
Seeing is leeving.
1639 J. Clarke Parmiologia Anglo-Latina 90
Seeing is beleeving.
1712 J. Arbuthnot Lewis Baboon iv.
There's nothing like Matter of Fact; Seeing is Believing.

The last paragraph on page 54 of David Regal's Approaching Magic, from the essay "Goodwill." Also, from that essay:
The love of an audience is a wonderful and precious thing.

Who said this, and what was he referring to:
A bad campfire story, followed by a self-working trick.

I believe that is Jeff Hass's definition of bizarre magic.

Re: Best Quote
Good quotes kick ass, and you can quote me on that.
There's a really good one--exactly what 000's looking for--in the Patrick Martin cover feature, but we are under penalty of throttling if we reveal it.
These aren't what 000 had in mind, but here are a few about magic "in general". All are by non-magicians, coincidently enough:
"If you take any activity, any art, any discipline, any skill, take it and push it as far as it will go, push it beyond where it has ever been before, push it to the wildest edge of edges, then you force it into the realm of magic." --Tom Robbins
"Genius is another word for magic, and the whole point of magic is that it is inexplicable." --Margot Fonteyn
"Only after looking and listening closely can one make these various subtleties work magic." --Lu Chi
"I see painting as an evocative magic, and there must always be a random factor in magic, one which must be constantly changed and renewed." --William S. Burroughs
"Magic is a matter of focusing the disciplined Will. But sometimes the Will must be abandoned. The secret lies in knowing when to exercise control and when to let it go." --Marion Bradley
-on royalty
"Its mystery is its life. We must not let in daylight upon magic." --Walter Bagehot
"An idea can turn to dust or magic, depending on the talent that rubs against it." --William Bernbach (Ain't it the truth!)

Re: Best Quote
There is an Indian proverb that says "Magic is a sea in which a gnat may drink and an elephant may bathe".
O.K., the proverb actually refers to the game of Chess ("Chess is a sea ..."), but I think you can substitute the word Magic.
It's akin to the Burger "many rooms" quote.

That's what happened to Bob Read and he never performed his "Penultimate Cups and Balls" for many years after his props were stolen.

Harry Brandon to his son Arthur Brandon (Milo of Milo & Roger):
"Arthur, I see that magic is really just a lot of [censored]."
"Yes, Pop, you've got it. It is," young Arthur Brandon rejoined. "But you've got to know just how to shovel it."
From Milo & Roger: A Magical Life by Arthur Brandon. Published by Hermetic Press, page 113.
My second favorite book.

Re: Best Quote
"The profession of magician is one of the most perilous and arduous of the imagination. On the one hand, there is the hostility of God and the police to be guarded against; on the other, it is as difficult as music, as deep as poetry, as ingenious as stagecraft, as nervous as the manufacture of high explosives and as delicate as the trade in narcotics." William Bolitho, English author, 1890-1930
"[Magic] is a terribly hard art form ... to compose a new tune in magic, you don't just write the notes, you build the piano." - Teller
Scully: "So, who do we arrest? David Copperfield?" Mulder: "Yes. But not for this." -- The X-Files.

Re: Best Quote
John Carney once gave me advice that I believe he got from Dai Vernon. The quote was simply "Attitude". Before taking the stage, remind yourself to have that "attitude" of confidence, fun and of loving your audience. It's a thought that has carried me far beyond magic and that I try to apply to life in general. A simple, one word thought that conveys so much.
