Tivo Alert: USPC Factory Tour
Tomorrow night (February 28), The Travel Channel re-airs an episode of "John Ratzenberger's Made in America" in which he visits the United States Playing Card factory in Cincinnati.

So, TIVO would let you skip this whole show you're saying?

Thanks, do they discuss how USPC has been buying other playing card companies and now do custom orders including marked cards?Originally posted by Craig Matsuoka:

Nah. Just activate the undocumented Ratzenberger filter. Enter "7385400808" into your remote control and Tivo will digitally replace all pixels of ol' Cliffy with those of Jessica Alba.Originally posted by mikie:

Actually, it's a facinating show. Getting to see the inside operations of a place like that (and the lock company they visit after USPC) is cool.
It's just too bad that the Bikes we all know and love don't have the priority that casino cards do for quality.

Supply and demand -- casinos demand they supply high quality.Originally posted by Jeff Haas:

We get high quality so long as it's one deck at a time. Of course those quality issues can be a valuable tool in the right hands.

I taped the two half hour shows back to back on Feb 28th and I didn't see the segment on US Playing Cards. Did I miss something? I did see how Toosie rolls were made, Rogers organs, a segment on Highlights childrens magazine and rollercoasters.

The first segment of the show had the story on USPCC. I don't think you missed that much.Originally posted by Sam Kesler:

The other segments were on Sargent & Greenleaf lock factory -- which I did find interesting -- and the history of roller coasters, which I found to be a yawner.
All in all, it made me want to find old Cheers reruns.

I was able to visit the gift shop at USPC a month ago, and they had for sale the "Made in America" decks that showed up for a few seconds (the cards with Ratzenberger's face).

Re: Tivo Alert: USPC Factory Tour
The founder's room scene was full of collectible goodies like a huge book filled with samples of their old cards. It would be great if they published it.
I also thought it was interesting to learn how they make their own cardstock by laminating the layers together. For some reason, that was a surprise to me. Up until now, I thought some other company did all that work for them. Now I know it's done in-house. It was cool (for me anyway) to see the ultra-super-top-secret black goo they use for the center layer. According to the manager, it's what gives the cards their "playability".
Some might have found the short USPC segment boring, but I enjoyed it.

My apology for my dumbness. :D My VCR (I know, Dark Age technology) didn't rewind all the way and I finally found the card factory segment. What a Joker!
Wow...2 million cards a day! I liked the story how Bicycle got its name (too obvious?). Sad that magic or card tricks weren't mentioned. John is pretty funny though.

Re: Tivo Alert: USPC Factory Tour
No, they didn't mention magic, but if you were watching you saw one of those oh-so-prolific black closeup pads with the yellow lines and cards on the corners. Odds on favorite it came from Haines House of Cards five blocks down the street from USPC.
Oh, and Craig, that TIVO code didn't work right. It replaced Ratzenberger, but it was with some guy talking about Okito.

Re: Tivo Alert: USPC Factory Tour
Never mind, Craig - I just checked and I must have entered 7385400809 instead of 7385400808. Instead of getting Jessica Alba I got Robert Albo...
