Just a reminder to those, like myself, who hadn't ordered this yet: This was finally released through normal channels today, and is available at Amazon.

If you want to buy it, all you have to do is look at the right side of your computer screen and scroll down: you'll see it right there, on Amazon.com, and you can click through to amazon on that box and help support this free Forum.

Just today, Tuesday, I received the copy from Sony Music that I ordered months ago. The booklet was considerably larger than I thought after hearing some of the other comments.

Haven't had a chance to look at the DVD yet.

Hi Mr.Kaufman,
i understand the "Ricky Jay Plays Poker" comes into two editions: normal one and special one.
Do you know the differences?
And, if i click to the right in the genii ad for "Ricky Jay..." will i get a regular one or the special one?
Best regards
Crim

crimsonking,

The amazon ad on the Forum page is a direct link to the deluxe edition.

There has been some confusion because last year there was news of a regular (CD only) and a deluxe edition (with accompanying DVD, booklet and playing cards). It appears that the release of the regular edition was scrapped entirely, as only the deluxe edition now appears on the producer's (Sony) website.

So, yes, the listing for 39.98 on Amazon is indeed the deluxe version...

You don't want the regular edition: the deluxe edition has the booklet and DVD with Ricky, plus the custom-deck of cards.
Any Ricky Jay fan is going to love this set.

Sounds like nobody wanted it, which is probably why it was cancelled: a dud right from the git go.

Perhaps we'll see this on the remainder tables soon? ;)

I'm betting that the deluxe set won't ever end up remaindered, but it's possible the cd by itself could. The cd would be a seller as a solo item with different packaging, to make it appeal more to the old-timey/vintage jazz & blues crowd instead of the more limited magical audience. Well, it might sell anyway as it is... people know him from Deadwood and the Mamet films, who knows?

I like the cd, but that kind of music is already my cup of tea. It is a perfect soundtrack for a home poker game, that's certain.

The deluxe set is definitely where it's at though, it's incredibly fun if you're an aficionado of Mr. Jay's work.

But you're all probably right about the limited appeal. The deluxe set might come and go and never be there again. I'd grab it now before there ain't no more to grab... if you got the interest.

Can anyone help?

I'd like to buy this - I live in the UK and amazon.co.uk are listing it here:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Ricky-Plays-Pok ... 187&sr=8-1

It mentions a dvd, but makes no mention of the 72pp booklet and the pack of cards.

Can anyone definitely confirm that the regular edition has been scrapped and that this is the "deluxe" edition with all the elements present.

I'd obviously like the complete package.

Any advice much appreciated!

Jonesey,

The best I can do is say that I am completely unaware of a set other than the one with the two discs, liner notes (the booklet), and the cards.

Jonesy, considering how weak the dollar is and how much amazon.co.uk wants (28 pounds!!), it would cost you a lot less to simply order it from amazon.com in the US and have it shipped to you. That way you would be certain that you're getting exactly the one you want and YOU'LL PAY LESS. :)

Hi Richard

Thanks , but I've checked out this option. With expedited shipping it works out at $48.50 (24.50 UK). It would take up to three weeks to reach me, and there would be import duty of 17.5% to add.

So - it seems it would be much simpler to order from amazon.co.uk and receive it in a few days(as long as it's the deluxe edition :) )

Sorry that doesn't work for you. I buy things from amazon.co.uk all the time. They have enormous discounts on DVDs, and the airmail shipping charge is really small!

Speaking of shipping charges, if you do a sizable amount of business with Amazon, their Amazon Prime program is great. For $79 a year, you get free 2-day shipping, or next-day shipping upgrades for $3.99 per item.

I've just received "Ricky Jay Plays Poker." Happily it turned out to be the deluxe edition!

I've listened to the cd and played the dvd. My verdict - fantastic!

Poker players, magicians and Ricky Jay fans will all love this. Highly recommended.

I ordered Ricky Jay Plays Poker a couple of weeks ago at Amazone using the link on the Forum page. I paid including postage 43 dollar (= 22 UK pound / 32 Euro) and it is really fun to watch (and hear).
