Magic Castle and the White Stripes
I take it the no photos in the castle rule is over!? I was a bit suprised to see the new WhiteStripes music video set in the castle with kids running all over the place and sitting at the bar!
It was quite funny actually. It must have some people a bit up in arms though, eh!?

You can see it on the White Stripes website - the first video (something about a doorbell)

The Stripes are genius. Their new album is fantastic and a must buy. Looking closely, one can see the portraits of magicians on the walls of the Castle. Irma is really playing, Mike's just pretending.

Apparently shot entirely in the Castle, the music is simplistic at best. No one seems to have noticed that the kids were dressed like the characters in the Our Gang comedies.
I hope the Castle got a good fee for this project. It will help with the financial shortfall.

Great filming and use of the Castle. And... any fees paid are divided 60-40 between Milt and the AMA (not the Glovers). (Remember, it is Milt that "owns" the props).
Stay tooned.

I've looked at it a couple of times (muted, of course)and for the life of me it sure looks like Steve Valentine behind the bar...

I sort of liked that music video against my better taste :) . A bit too 'pop', but the drummer was cute and the style of the video is neat.
Re: Magic Castle and the White Stripes
I am a huge White Stripes fan. Very cool to see them at the Castle.
Re: Magic Castle and the White Stripes
I didn't realize Irma had facial hair...
Not a bad video. Never heard of White Stripes. Are they local to CA. Here in AK we don't hear many new artist on our radio stations. They won't even play local artist. We have great talent here.

Re: Magic Castle and the White Stripes
Just a note about the comment on TV shows shot at the Magic Castle. I believe that if you check you will find that the Bill Bixby series included ONLY exterior shots of the Castle. All the interior shots were made up sets. Bixby's supposed quarters in the Castle were in the area which was actually the library. (I don't know where the library is now -- it occupied three different spots during my time there: First in what later became the Houdini room; then in the area that became Bill Larsen's office; lastly in the large front room over the entrance area of the building. I haven't been in the library since 1979 when I left Los Angeles.)
You are right that lots of TV activity took place in the Castle over time. It was always during a time when the Castle was closed.
What you said about there now being a professional photographer on site to take and sell photos to guests is MOST disturbing. A far cry from the Castle we knew. Read some of the news letters from the early days -- 1963 and 1964 and compare what you read with what prevails now.

Re: Magic Castle and the White Stripes
Just wanted to add that I recall seeing a Tom Snyder show inside the castle (1996 or 97?). The show presented many of the rooms with people present. Also featured several magicians performing to laypeople inside the various rooms.

The Castle was also prominently featured in Clive Barker's Lord of Illusions starring Scott Bakula. Billy McComb had a cameo.

Shelly, while I'm not real familiar with new rock groups I know the White Stripes are a very popular modern rock band in the minimalist vein (only the two players) out of Chicago. They are actually very good.

Actually, they're from my hometown of Detroit.
Re: Magic Castle and the White Stripes
Steve, Thanks for the info on the Stripes I will look up their web site and check them out.
As far as photo's at the Castle...I THINK NOT! It takes away it's mystery.
I had to do a lot of pleading to get a photo in the close-up room next to my Grandfather's portrait.
I'm not up to speed on where the Castle is reguarding it's finances. It would be such a loss if it closed it's doors.
I didn't feel the music video exposed much of the Castle's interior, you really had to know what you were looking for/at. If it helped with the finances great!
Photo's for a momento outside the Castle ok, but inside hummmmmm
