Karl Fulves' library

I have seen the name of Karl Fulves popping up here and there in various threads. Maybe some of the fraternity does not have a full understanding of the mind boggling production Karl Fulves has completed over the last 30 some years.

Most of the titles are published by himself under his own name or Gutemberg Press. Other major publishers are Dover, the late Max Abrams and Tannen's.


Here is a list of titels, publishing year and number of pages. These titles I have in my library or know of, however I am sure there are additional titles out there. Any new information is very welcome.

Thanks for the bibliography of the Fulves' publications. A lot of people forget the output in periodicals which, oftentimes, can be quite prolific. That's sorta like listing the works of Richard Kaufman and omitting GENII. For instance, I note that you include THE PALLBEARER'S REVIEW and EPILOGUE which, I assume are the reprints, and the S-C series. Please note that Richard, in his Dec. 6 post to this forum, mentioned SWINDLE SHEETS and CHEAT SHEET (10 issues), together with RIGMAROLE (10 issues, also), for sale. The latter, I am informed, was accompanied by another periodical, VERBATIM, which have might have been included.

Fulves, which most people don't know, published the last four issues of THE NEW PHOENIX (#s 397-400) as a precursor (that's another periodical by another publisher) to PALLBEARERS which immediately followed thereafter. Following PALLBEARERS was CHRONICLES which, I think, has been reprinted in book form, also.

Fulves published periodicals named CHARLATAN, UNDERWORLD accompanied by FINE PRINT, INTERLOCUTOR, and MIDNIGHT MAGIC MONTHLY (13 issues, a complete file of which is virtually unobtainable).

You mention VAMPIRE CHRONICLES and VAMPIRE PAPERS, of which I have never heard. I would appreciate any info regarding these publications.

There are others, I am sure. You might want to do an exhaustive search of the Alfredson/Daily and Fernandes' bibliographies if you are serious about pursuing them. Many, I am told, were accompanied by various props. Good luck in completing any file!

Here's a description of "Vampire Chronicles" from "H & R Magic Books - List #18":

"Collection of tricks all having a vampire theme. The vampire angle is not heavy-handed, most use a humourous presentation, with jokes and gags aplenty. Although most of the effects use cards, there is also an origami trick and one with a pencil. Even if you don't care for the vampire slant, there are the usual thoughtful and interesting card tricks you expect from Fulves. Comb bound, 92 pages."

I would like to add my thanks to Jahn for his extraordinary catalog of Fulves books.

I am a big admirer of Karl's and have many of his works, which I treasure. His amazing output of creativity over the years, his establishment of forums via his periodicals, his volumes devoted to the Daley diaries and books on Bob Hummer and Gene Finnell, and his "Self-Working" Dover series which helps spur an interest in magic are all invaluable contributions to our Art.

Regarding "Vampire Chronicles," of which I believe there are now 3 volumes, the deluxe verson came with the necessary apparatus to do many of the tricks, including gaffed cards and other great stuff. This wonderful practise (the inclusion of apparatus) is also part of many of Karl's peiodical offerings over the past several years.

Always very interesting to read. Epilogue and Pallbear's have always been my favorites. I think it was very good to republish complete files, so that many of todays magicians can have access to these great sources for tricks and magic history.

Karl Fulves current publications are called "Discoverie,Charlatan,Latter Day Secrets".Started in 1999 and I am waiting for #7.They arrive together,along
with one or two small envelopes with cards needed to do some of the effects.
You pay for a subscription of ten issues,in
this case "Discovery".No timetable is given for release of next issue.But you always receive the what you paid for plus.

Jahn, thanks again for updating the Fulves material. Pretty amazing output, isn't it? I wonder if any issues of NOTEBOOK were actually issued? Hopefully, someone on this Forum will know.

I am not a Fulves collector but I do thrive on periodicals. This brings me to a stange point. For instance, what is a periodical? To me, a lot of Fulves' output does not qualify as periodicals. For instance, RIGMAROLE was advertised, in advance, as being 10 issues, with props, for $65 plus $22 for postage. In other words, $87 for 10 issues to be issued in the future. Period. Finis. That's not a periodical! What that is, is an $80 book issued in ten future installments. This is true with some of his other "periodicals". They certainly are not "magazines" as we know the term. Where does such an animal fit?

By saying the foregoing, I do not mean to detract from the material. It is more of a matter of "classification". Also, that is not the first marketing ploy used by Fulves. While PALLBEARER'S, in my mind, was a true periodical, I certainly got chapped by Fulves when he issued his Folios at an extra charge to his normal subscription rate. It wouldn't have been so bad except that the Folios were paginated with the other issues so that one, desiring to have a "complete file", had to purchase the Folios. Thank Goodness, that practice hasn't caught on with others! Gee! What would one have done if he had come out with a kid show Folio?

Anyway, thanks again, for the thorough job you have done.

I'm going to put out a special Genii Folio for $500 a copy, and there will only be 20 copies so virtually no one can have a complete file of Genii.
Oh ... sorry, I was having a nightmare--I looked in the mirror and saw Jeff Busby's face.
I subscribed to Epoptica and Arcane about 15 years ago and never received a SINGLE copy of either magazine!

Has he ever featured in Genii? I've got quite a few back issues but I haven't seen a feature article on him... which is quite surprising given his enormous talent.

Or perhaps he prefers, and has been granted, some privacy, which is most commendable. One of the few remaining mysterious personalities of magic... perhaps it's for the best that he hasn't been featured?!

Karl Fulves prefers to let his work speak for itself and to remain in the background. We have approached him repeatedly about a cover story in Genii and he has declined.
I have met him several times, but he has many friends in magic who've met him quite frequently in the past.
He gives his phone number to no one, but calls others.
He lives spitting distance from Herb Zarrow and Meir Yedid in New Jersey, however there is almost no biographical information available.
The words "reclusive" and "private" would apply.

A photo of Mr. Fulves is in book, "The Magical World of Slydini", altough is now almost 30 years old ;)

Just a bit of information to offer here. I've met the man a few times in Tannen's. One afternoon he brought Scott Kim to the shop to show his wonderful calligraphy artwork that has since been published in a book titled Inversions. He once discussed an amusement where a packet of cards would be carried in a wallet and shown to a magician along with request to reconstruct the trick, as the instructions were lost. Very funny idea. The man also has a phenomenal memory. I'm glad he's still a part of the magic community and offering items via his mailing address. I lived up the street from him as a kid. Back then he took calls and I used to phone him and order books. When I would walk past his place, I would often wonder what new magical creations he was working on inside.

Just wanted to add a note for those interested in Fulves esoterica. Fulves wrote a science fiction book, published in paperback in 1976 called "Aftermath: Stories From the Rigel War." It's quite a rarity (although I notice a copy currently offered on Alibris). At any rate, I've heard that it could be used as a force book, but wasn't able to ascertain that when I examined the book. Does anyone know about this?

I was at a John Carney lecture near the Castle a few weeks ago and heard about a magic book collection obtained by Duttons. Imagine to my surprise when I opened Mr. Fulves' two-volume set of "The Magical World of Slydini" to find 'best magical wishes, Slydini' on the title page. A signed Slydini! The joke was on me. I was surfing abebooks and found out it was photocopied on all the books (is this right?). No matter. I would've bought them anyway. I'm proud to add them to my growing collection.

The Slydini signature is not "photocopied." They added it to the title page when the book was in production and it was printed like everything else. This has caused no end of confusion because many buyers thing it is real, and some sellers take advantage of this fact. The tip-off is that it's black, and Slydini generally used a blue ball point pen to sign books (because that's what most people handed him).
While there are certainly some of Slydini's signatures in black ink, they are far less common.

BTW, a friend of mine contacted Fulves to see if he knew the titles of all his publications. Fulves replied that he didn't and didn't even have copies of all of them.

Fulves also wrote the text for a number of the Stars of Magic manuscripts, including Chris Capehart's 3-Ring Routine, Joe de Stefano's Chinatown Poker, Max Londono's Eternal String and Metalogic (Fred Baumann).

I also note a few other titles that can be added to Jan's list, although I'm sure there are more:
Kaleidoscope (containing card tricks)
IncrediBook - a book test written with Sam Schwartz containing 2 versions (different covers) of the same force book
Okito Box - (not sure of the full title)

Finally, to clarify (or add to) the confusion that Richard noted, I believe that The Magic of Slydini and More is the same book as The Best of Slydini and More. Apparently, it had to be retitled due to copyright infringement because of Ganson's Magic of Slydini, previously published by Supreme. Supposedly less than 100 sets were distributed before the recall. There is also, as Jan noted, The Magical World of Slydini, which I believe is a completely different book. Since I don't have any of these at hand, I'm relying on memory, but I believe that one of them had the signature printed in blue ink.

The original edition of The Magic of Slydini does not have the blue inscription as in the Annotated version. However it does have a page of an introductory letter from Slydini with a printed signature, white on crimson, with a footnote stating "This is a restricted first edition". This is in addition to the Foreword by Slydini. Latter is of course in the Annotated version as well as additional materiala wonderful product!

Most people have never seen the red "signed" page in the original Slydini book, just as they have never seen the gold "signed" page in the original Vernon book. These deluxe editions are very hard to come by and were printed in low numbers. The way in which it was done by Harry Stanley left no question that the signatures were printed and not genuine.

I don't think there was an alternative to these De Luxe (not called that?) editions when the books were first published by Harry S. The Vernon Gold Page has a printed signature. The personalized signature I have looks like ink from a fountain pen but I can't remember that far back although I do remember Vernon's Tenkai Palm/Switch then!

There is a somewhat recent genre of Fulves contributions that I have tried to follow. Aldo Columbini (and now Rachel) have published several DVD's and books containing contributions from Fulves. I have not talked to Aldo about these contributions but intend to soon. If anyone has any details about this, let me know.

The text volume of my copy of THE BEST OF SLYDINI...AND MORE is autographed in blue ink Best wishes, Slydini.

Karl Fulves wrote the text for my New Stars of Magic effect titled Perfect Coin Assembly which Tannen's published in 1973.

Missing from the list of Fulves publications is a major one. He reprinted in 1973
J.N. HOFZINSER'S CARD CONJURING through THE GUTENBERG PRESS. It was published with a beautiful blue library quality hardcover binding in a very limited edition for $25. The forward to this second edition was written by S. H. Sharpe.

I have a number of very early Fulves manuscripts that he never published.

Curiously, my daughter, Ruth, Karl Fulves and the late Jack Avis have the same birthday...July 27.
