Yeah, that's what I was thinking. Isn't that easier than getting the whole audience in on it in some kind of magician's version of the sting?...

Occam's Razor: The simplest explanation...

How about pure chance, that would be the simplest explanation!

So, is he using a stooge who can read the number on a paper stuck to his front zipper pants or some elaborate high tech secretive Taiwanese invention?

Occam's Razor is not just accepting the simplest answer, but accepting the simplest answer that explains the most.

"Chance" explains nothing.

Let's say you have three ways that are time tested and proven to accomplish a thing. The first involves an ice cube. The second involves some powerful magnets and some serious machinery built into the floor of the room or pressed against the ceiling of the room below. The third involves lighting, carefully set up wires and just enough distance from the object for the optics to work properly. You are also told rumors about another method. You see the performance and are told the item is being sold to performers who do average pay shows and walkaround gigs. Do you then insist that it's not the ice cube that's used but a tame cosmic string of exotic matter that's doing the work by gravitational forces alone?

Occam suggested NOT multiplying the entities used in constructing an explanation unless each and all are necessary and nothing less would suffice. In the standard English translation of his Latin: "entities must not be multiplied beyond necessity" entia non sunt multiplicanda praeter necessitatem

Let's save the fancy stuff for our presentation scripts. :)

He'd be cool with 52 decks, 52 stooges and a funky mnemonic to know what deck has the card in the right place. Simplest method. ;)

Hello Richard,

Just a few words to let you know that my copy of the book has finally landed here in France.

Actually, DHL tried to deliver it since July 10th, but they missed some information about my adress.

Now, time to read !

Regards,
Thomas

Wisdom Kim's credit card was declined when his original order was processed, we sent him an email, and he never replied. Thus he was never charged and his book was never shipped. That's why he has no book.

Next.

Great idea to put the link to it so everyone can see it. Really smart!

EDIT: just looked and it's a huge piracy site. I'd recommend removing the link.

Instead of being ironic, you should thank me for avoiding the book to be again on a piracy site ;)

A private message to one of the moderators is a less unseemly way to address questionable findings than posting a link on the public threads.

a) it was sarcasm, not irony.

b) Thank you? For posting a link to a piracy thread so all the other people who have work on there being stolen can lose some more cash?

c) It didn't say it was a scan of the book, it said for 30 bucks he would tell you how the berglas effect worked

e) What happened to d)?

d) Ah, here it is

Friboudi, just because the Berglas Effect is on a piracy site doesn't mean it is Richard's book. You can't be serious. And you expect us to thank you?

Suess, there are a lot of really ignorant people posting on that site you linked to. With The Berglas Effect now fully explained in print, you'd think some of them might READ THE BOOK before posting stupid stuff like that.

Indeed. Posted just for that reason. Sometimes interesting to see the strange conclusions the lay public will draw.

I remember as a kid a friend's guess at Copperfield's statue of liberty vanish... "That wasn't the one in NY, he just had another one made and used that one."

Hey Richard,

Quick question about the Think-A-Card material in the Berglas book.

I have heard you say that you can do it - but I am just wondering at what level you are at? Do you hit the correct card most of the time (let's say 90% of the time?) and also - do you do it from the card fan - or can you do it when the spectator spreads through the cards himself?

Also - is doing the effect when the spectator spreads through the cards - just as easy as doing it from the fan? Or does it make it more difficult to hit?

Anyway - thanks once again for a great book. Just really interested to hear your experiences as a fellow student of Berglas' work.

Joe

I can hit with "Think a Card from a Fan" 98% of the time, which means the card the person looked at is within four cards of the top or bottom of the deck 98% of the time. I have added it to my repertiore and the reactions from people who've seen me do magic for many years is that this is something entirely different--they are amazed because I apparently do nothing.

I hit "Think a Card from a Spread" where the person spreads the deck in their own hands about 80% of the time.

I finally had a chance to start reading this book without interruption (I was getting my car fixed). It's fantastic.

I never read a magic book from front to back, I always jump around, then go back, then read it from front to back. There were several things I found today that were so good, I was happy even after I paid the mechanic (auto not card).

The "memory erasers:" what a powerful method (and see the recent book, "Brain Bugs" for more on this). The "Magician's Choice" chapter could have been a book all by itself selling for $50 or more.

On the "too-cool-to-believe-it-but-it's true" front, David Berglas has started a magic foundation with Dr. Jim Marshall (Who? Ask those who have basked in the glow of a quartet of KT66s).

This is one of the great magic books.

Roger, now to devolve this discussion into areas even David Berglas can't understand: I retubed my Mesa Boogie MK IV with GT-6l6S-Q, replacing MB EL34s in the end sockets and MB6L6s in the middle sockets--the replacements made it sound as if a blanket had been lifted off the amp.

But Bob, there are other ways to retube your Mesa Boogie MK IV, and I'm not saying that your way is bad but there are definitely easier and faster ways. I retubed mine with a PT-6969 V. That way, you don't even have to mess with the sockets. Just my two cents!

I'm mystified by the posts on exomagic--the readers are misunderstanding both the text and what they're seeing on the DVDs. Either they're stupid or just can't comprehend what's in the book, or haven't read it carefully, or just really don't care that David has been doing this for 50 years. The fact that he's been using this material successfully doesn't seem to enter into their thinking, which is narrow-minded and idiotic.

Showing the performances on the DVDs to laymen and then drawing conclusions from that is ridiculous--you have to LEARN and PERFORM the material, as I have been doing with "Think a Card," to see how powerful it is.
