Magic at wakes?

Postby Peter Ross » August 3rd, 2020, 11:58 am

As part of a compilation of "Weird Dad" episodes from author and actor John Hodgman's podcast, a dad explained his sincere request to his children to have a mime unironically perform at his wake. I'm wondering if anyone has ever heard of a magician being asked to perform at a wake (not including a magician's wake). Like a real gig.

There was a guy who worked at Tannen's who once told me he had done funerals. I think he was serious.

I know a gent by the name of Teddy Lee who ran a funeral home. His tag line is "The Mortician Magician." Not kidding. He's a good friend.

Yes, the well-to-do family of a dearly departed once sought to hire me to perform at one.

They offered $5000 for me to perform just a single trick.

I turned the offer down.

The trick was the Substitution Trunk.

I was younger. I was drunk. I was in an Irish bar. There was a wake in the back room. I called in a stripper for the dead guy.
