FISM Invention Award Winners (List in Progress)

Postby jimb_85 » April 28th, 2019, 5:43 pm

I've noticed that there's very little information about the World Championship of Magic that really gets revealed to the public. Most notably, while the winners get their names publicized, hardly any information about their effects or illusions that won them their awards make the press. This is especially noteworthy with the Invention winners, where often you never know what they won for unless it's listed as a selling point online. I've tried to compile whatever information was available online (many thanks to https://fismreports.wordpress.com for covering the 2000s), and tried to put together a compilation that I'll update when more becomes available. If anyone wants to add or offer corrections, any help would be appreciated.

1948:
Burtini - Multum in Parvo

1949:
Maub van Embden - Named card in crystal ball effect

1952:
Frank Cleaver - Flying Saucer that spun while levitating

1967:
Manfred Thumm - presumably for the "Magic Hands" routine

1979:
Christian Fechner - vanishing television
Mykog - "Animal Magnetism" routine (volunteer finds themselves stuck to the magician's hand)
Magic Christian - chain links that switch position and link together

1982:
Pavel - Walking Knot

2000:
Ariston - ARISing Card (named rising card effect)
Kalle Nio - inflatable glass bottle/signed card in frozen bottle effect

2003:
Jason Latimer - Clear Cups and Balls
Jan Ditgen - "Knowledge Cookie" book test

2006:
Mathieu Bich - "Spreadwave"

2012:
Tango - "Tango Ultimate Coin" (TUC)

2015:
Antonio Romero - "Antonio Romer Hold Out" (ARHO)

You really should go through the Apr 1997 issue of Genii, in which Max Maven writes a history of FISM, including lists of all of the award winners.

Does it mention what effects/performances won them the awards, or is it just a list of the names of the winners?

Thanks. Some of that info is sparse, though, and it still doesn't provide much on what the effects that won them the awards were.

Aren’t all sword boxes ‘fluid producing’ if you perform them incorrectly?

If you can bring an audience to tears with that trick - good for you. Not sure you want to go for other more primal reactions in most venues. ;)

Is Mr. Mysto's "Any Fluid Called For" on the list?
