Sub Trunk

Postby Bogd19 » October 24th, 2020, 10:18 pm

I’m working on building a sub trunk using the osbourne plans. I bout a book with the plans in it and the photo isn’t great. Any ideas where a clearer picture is located? Also, does anyone know who sells a bottomless sack for the trick? Not a great at sewing! Thanks for any help

In lieu of a clearer photo, perhaps the line-drawings contained within Lesson 79, 'Escapes and Substitutions', of the Tarbell Course in Magic, Volume 6, pages 279-308 - specifically the sub-section, entitled: 'The Substitution Trunk Mystery' - might be of use to you in clearing up whatever detail it is which the Paul Osborne plan does not satisfactory render for your need.

If you cannot find a dealer who can supply the sack you require, I would suggest speaking to one of the lady-clerks who cut the fabric at your local Jo-Ann fabric store; as these women are knowable seamstresses in their own right, and, just might be interested in picking up some quick and easy custom piece-work on the side. Tarbell also provides the basic/average sack dimensions if you need them.

Last tip, if you don't do this already when building your own illusions: Triple-check your dimensions based on the actual size of you and your assistant's body - always be very wary of general dimensions given in plans and books - and, you'll be doing yourself a big favor if you make full-scale, working-model mock-ups out of heavy-duty cardboard and duct tape, before you settle on any dimension. Dimensions are so much easier to test-fit and change in cardboard, as opposed to pricey wood.

Best of luck to you!

If anyone wants an easier build on a Sub Trunk, with a different approach to hiding the secret so the trunk can be on display before and after, take a look at our Sub Cube in The Wizards' Journal #18- 05 ( https://www.magicnook.com/WIZJ18/wizj18-05SubCube.htm ). The box is easily constructed of pine wood for under $100.00. All the pieces are attached with bolts and wing nuts and come apart for transportation in the back seat of a car. The construction and secret of the box is NOT like anything that has been used before. The box may be displayed in the lobby, you can lock a spectator inside and let him try to escape and he will not succeed. The secret operation of the bag is also unlike anything that has been used before. The box is easily constructed of pine wood for under $100.00. The interaction with the audience is also different, in that two spectators hold ropes they have tied around the top of the bag after putting the escape artist inside the bag, and the top of the bag pokes out of a hole in the top of the box where they can see it at all times.
