Actually, I think the best self defense would be to hand the assailant one of those old metal vanishing canes (or as we used to call it: "The Self Finger Chopper").

Re: From Magic to Self-Defense
For what it is worth, I have practiced Tae Kwon Do for most of my life.
It is amazing what is taught that is worthless.
But that aside, one day some guy walked into the Fox Fun-n-Magic shop in Detroit. A magician named John Osborne was in the shop and Roy Kissel was behind the counter. I don't know what the guy was doing but somehow was getting into Roy's face. Roy grabbed an appearing cane and produced it as if it were a weapon. The guy grabbed the cane and wrapped it around Roy's arm. I am not sure what happened next. I believe John said he would get the police and ran out of the shop onto Woodward Ave. (I think it was Woodward). Anyway, the guy caught up with him and John said he turned and saw him about four feet away. Suddenly John woke up on the ground. He said he could briefly remember the guy's fist in his face.

The single absolute truth is that we don't know.

Sounds like Richard sure puts the "fist" in "pacifist."
