Penny trick

Postby Van » August 18th, 2002, 9:03 pm

Does anyone have a reference for the trick using pennies arranged around the perimeter of a square in small piles such that the total number of coins on each side is the same, then a coin is removed, the coins redistributed and each side again totals the original total?

I know this is in print somewhere but I seem to be having a CRS attack.

Thanks,

Van

There's a version of the trick in Michael Weber's book "Life Savers," and another in Jim Steinmeyer's new book "Impuzzabilities."

I imagine that the idea here is old but does anyone know its origin?

I have some video of Jim Ryan performing it at the Midwest Magic Jubilee in St. Louis years ago. I'm going to have to dig up that video to remember the method...

Also, Vernon was there and he's on the video too. Good reason to resurrect it.

I don't know if it's in print or even if it's his own version, but several years ago at the IBM convention in Buffalo, Giovanni closed with this and "Killed!"

He sure did, but Gio kills with everything... I believe his routine is written up in the Genii magizine that bears his photo on the cover from a year or two ago.
